Making a template for laying bricks with your own hands. Do-it-yourself brick laying template
Today we will consider both the standard arsenal of a bricklayer, and special tools and fixtures. We will talk about ways to increase the efficiency of your work, the quality of brickwork and the convenience of work, including with the help of various improvised means.
Bricklayer Basic Set
The skill of laying bricks, with all the desire, cannot be successfully developed without elementary equipment. The mason is in charge of the whole process, starting with the preparation of the mortar, so even the basic set of tools cannot be called modest. Let's figure it out in order.
1. To mix the solution, you will need a container of at least 40-50 liters and a shovel. The volume of one batch is determined by the rate of production and the life time of the solution. On average, about 20-30 liters per hour is spent on bricklaying, you can cook with the expectation of 2-2.5 hours of work.
2. To carry the solution, you need a bucket of 12-14 liters, and in the case of delivery to the upper floors without lifting devices, two smaller ones, 9-10 liters.
3. The solution is applied using a trowel (trowel). There are several forms of the sole, you should choose based on your own preferences for the convenience of working with a certain type of masonry and stone format. The standard form of a trowel for brickwork is a trapezoid.
4. For the manufacture of additional elements, you will need a pickaxe hammer. The flat, pointed part will allow you to cut the edge of the stone with higher accuracy than other shaped heads.
5. A rubber mallet is ideal for setting and adjusting stones.
Measuring tools
It is impossible to maintain the plane of the walls, the angles and the accuracy of the erected box without a tool for measuring and marking. There is also a quite obvious gradation here: base and special level. Let's start with the basics:
1. A plumb line is something without which no bricklayer will start work. You can use any heavy object, but a conical weight is the best option. It does not shake the thread during unwinding, has a clear center and allows you to measure the verticality with an accuracy of 1 mm.
2. Roulette, and even better - two. One automatic for 3 meters for marking extensions and measuring openings, as well as one tape for 30 meters with fiberglass cloth.
3. Cord-mooring, it is also a kapron (or other slightly stretchy) thread with a length of 100 m or more. A pair of pins are attached to the cord, which are easily stuck into a fresh seam solution.
3. Pencils: dark for sand-lime brick, chalky for clay. Pencils should not be stationery, but construction, that is, oval in shape.
4. Water tubular level - with its help, the mooring anchor points are displayed.
5. A square for drawing right angles, the optimal length of the shoulders is at least two lengths of the brick used, that is, from 50 cm.
Well, special marking and measuring tools:
1. Laser axis builder. For laying brick enclosing walls, it is recommended to use a rotary level with a range of "shoot through" from 30 m.
2. Laser roulette. At times reduces the time spent on checking the geometry and dimensions of the masonry.
3. Accurate spirit (rack) level - needed to check local sections of the wall, laying corners and correcting stones laid without a mooring.
4. A long rule will make sure that the plane of the front surface of the masonry is maintained.
Solution handling equipment
If the solution has to be mixed and delivered by oneself, this can take from a third to a half of the working time. Special equipment and devices that speed up this process will not be superfluous.
First of all - a concrete mixer. Let even the simplest and small volume, but it definitely should be. This equipment is not just a way to fully automate the process of mixing the solution. In a concrete mixer, the mixture can be stored longer before use, and a new portion can be kneaded without even having used up the previous one to the end. As a result, a lot of time is freed up directly on the masonry.
The second point is the means of delivery. If the masonry is carried out on the second floor or far from the place where the mixture is prepared, you won’t be able to carry much with two buckets. In such situations, it is better to use a one-wheeled wheelbarrow, and to raise the solution to a height - a rope, a block, and a small tub with a capacity of 30-50 liters.
There are also ways to significantly speed up the laying of the mortar joint. Devices called mortar application templates allow you to speed up laying by 2-3 times. First, the entire row is covered with a uniform strip of binder, on which a new portion of stones is laid out on top, and the entire new row is laid in one run. Templates allow you to work not only faster, but also more accurately, maintaining a constant joint thickness, as well as reducing consumption and wastage of the mixture.
For laying walls in brick and thicker, it is more advisable to use carriages instead of templates. But this must be done carefully: the carriage works with a mixture of a more liquid consistency than is usually used for laying bricks. Therefore, the solution must be given some time to set, and when working with PCB or hollow brick, cover each row with a fine polymer mesh, which will not allow the binder to fall into the cells.
Stitching and ordering
The skill of rubble masonry is very ordinary, often quite serious requirements are made to the mason in relation to his artistic skill. But do not think that without many years of practice it will not be possible to achieve perfectly even and clean seams. We have already seen that it is very easy to maintain their constant thickness with special devices (templates), exactly the same is the case with leveling the masonry.
To tension the mooring, it is very convenient to use a rail-order. It is desirable that this device be factory-made. In this case, the notches will be made strictly with the same pitch, plus the kit will include everything necessary for securely fastening the rail. For laying walls with a length of 10 meters or more, it is recommended to use additional intermediate racks of orders to compensate for the sagging of the cord.
Work with refining the seams is the second component of aesthetic brickwork. A lot of hand tools have also been invented to perform embroidery. First of all, these are the stitching knives themselves, of which it is desirable to have two at your disposal: with a convex and concave working surface. It is desirable that the sting tapers towards the end, so you can work with any seam thickness. If the jointing is not recessed, it is advisable to have a light thin rail on hand along which the tool will be guided. Otherwise, a jointing bucket will be enough, which is difficult to do without if the seams are filled with a tinted composition. Roller scrapers are also very suitable for simple joint profiles.
TB and personal protective equipment
You can not work effectively and at the same time carelessly treat your own health. There are quite a lot of harmful production factors in the work of a bricklayer, some of them are capable of putting an end to a career.
The main danger to the health of the bricklayer is the solution. Its prolonged contact with the skin causes very serious irritation, so it is necessary to work with gloves that have hydrophobic impregnation on the inside of the palm, that is, they are simply rubberized. Another risk factor is splashing the solution into the eyes, which is especially dangerous if the mixture contains lime or caustic modifiers. Therefore, the loading of the solution and its preparation should be done with glasses. Not necessarily dense and massive, carpentry or just sunscreen will be enough, the main thing here is convenience.
How can you not forget about the danger of working at height. Even when working on high-quality modular scaffolding, there is always a chance to stumble. Therefore, work from the outer part of the wall above the 2nd floor (paneling, installation of orders) should be carried out only with a safety sling. And, of course, head protection is the most important rule of work at construction sites - to stay in a helmet, even if no work is being done at a higher level.
Special fixtures
The list of tools and improvised means is not limited to this. Not only masons, but also any more or less experienced craftsmen always strive to make their work easier and increase productivity through the use of various kinds of devices. Some of them are made by hand, some are bought, that's not the point: these tools are quite specific, they do not have to be in everyone's arsenal, but they can be extremely useful. Among these are:
1. Scraping. Ideal for removing excess mortar inside ventilation and technical wells.
2. Formwork, most often self-made, helps to make small openings and loopholes, and is also indispensable when laying out arched structures. This also includes supporting salaries for window and door openings.
3. If bricks of different sizes are used in the masonry, templates are very useful, allowing you to quickly establish the brand of stone. This is especially true for working with straight and wedge-shaped stones, which are not so easy to distinguish at first glance.
4. For laying walls in two layers with a gap, there is no need to align both lines along the pier. It is enough to lead one along the cord, and align the second with the help of a spacer.
Bricklaying has been and remains one of the most popular ways of building walls. This process is extremely responsible and rather complicated, since both the functionality and the aesthetics of the built building depend on its quality. For professionals with a “stuffed” hand, laying bricks is not difficult, they can bring out an even seam, lay bricks quickly and confidently. However, when building small structures (a fence, for example), ordinary people prefer not to use hired craftsmen. A device for laying bricks can help them more successfully cope with their task. With the help of such a device, even a beginner is able to bring the wall smoothly and efficiently.
A popular building material is used both for the direct construction of structures and for wall cladding. Recently, the latter type of work has been more in demand, since the construction of load-bearing elements made of bricks turns out to be both troublesome and expensive. However, no matter what work is planned with the use of this building material, a certain set of devices will be required, with the help of which the laying will be carried out. It includes:
- trowel, popularly known as a trowel. The tool has the form of a spatula, which is used for laying and leveling the fixing solution. A bucket can serve as an alternative to a trowel. It is recommended to use it if the masonry volumes are large and a lot of mortar is required;
- jointing - a device with which the finished seams on the outside of the wall are put in order. The tool comes in various sizes, is performed with a variety of patterns;
- a hammer is used in cases where, during the execution of work, it becomes necessary to correct the position of the brick or chip off an extra fragment from the element;
- ordering is a professional adaptation of masons, which makes it possible to achieve even masonry, orient the location of individual elements relative to each other, form door and window openings, display brick ornaments, etc.
Without all the listed devices for laying bricks, working with it is not possible.
Devices for control
“By eye” it will not work even for an experienced professional to bring out a smooth wall. Therefore, masons use a number of devices to help verify the geometric accuracy of the laid out forms.
- The bubble level is needed and cannot be replaced by another device when the rows are aligned horizontally.
- A plumb bob is used to control the vertical evenness of planes. It is also used when performing corners of the structure.
- The rule is a wide flat bar. It is used in the control and alignment of a single row of bricks.
- You can’t do without a square when making corners at the joints and intersections of walls.
Many craftsmen prefer to use the ready-made set "Mason" when carrying out work. Its equipment may be different; sometimes professionals in the set include tools and devices that are unknown to the townsfolk, but greatly simplify the work. A standard kit can be bought at a building supermarket, supplementing it with devices as necessary, with which you can solve a specific problem.
Brick laying devices
In addition to the basic set for work, there is a specialized device for even bricklaying. It can help in the construction of walls and a professional and a beginner. With its help, it becomes possible to regulate and control the thickness of the seam during the laying of the mortar, to achieve more even rows, to save on consumables. Such devices follow certain patterns, their design is very simple, and the parameters are adjusted in accordance with the needs of a particular operation. Both the width of the device, and its height, and the thickness of the fixture elements are taken into account.
In the finished, industrially produced form, the device is a kind of tray without a bottom, equipped with stops at the bottom of the base. The width of the instrument can be adjusted, which makes it possible to use it for a wide variety of dressing types. The use of such a device allows you to lay the mortar in an even layer both in width and along the length of the brick laying section.
The invention of the tool is attributed to Bricky from the USA. The same company has launched mass production of the device. Somewhat later, less expensive alternatives appeared, produced in other countries.
The material from which the device is made is plastic. Which provides the tool with a serious drawback: rather rapid wear. Sand, an indispensable ingredient in masonry mortar, scratches and abrades the work surface, resulting in the need to replace such useful equipment from time to time. Our craftsmen have come up with a way to extend the life of the device: they cover the damaged instrument with protective compounds like varnishes and enamels.
Usage algorithm
Work with the use of the device is facilitated at times, which is recognized even by professionals. And non-specialists without it are unlikely to be able to lay fairly even and thin seams.
- The width of the device is adjusted to the required in a particular case.
- The device is placed on the masonry; it should be oriented in the direction of advancing work with bricks.
- The form is filled with a solution. The layer thickness is determined by the guide rails.
- The excess solution is removed with a trowel.
Then the device moves along the masonry, and all operations are repeated. Mistakes can happen only at the very beginning of work. The main one is laying too much solution over the entire length of the tray. It is better to limit yourself to a distance of a couple of bricks, because the elements must be laid before the mortar sets.
Moving the device is very simple: the stops on the base fix the tray relative to the walls, so there is no need to adjust its position.
Homemade device for laying bricks
It is clear that if voluminous construction work is ahead, then it would be wiser to buy a device. However, if you are only planning to build a fence or a base for a gazebo, then you don’t want to spend money on a device that will later lie around in the barn as a dead weight. Even if it is not so expensive, in the range of 1.5-2 thousand rubles. For one-time purposes, the dispenser can be built independently.
Before you make a template, you should decide on its basic geometric parameters, namely, the dimensions of the seam in the masonry. The second important point that needs to be decided ahead of time is the material from which the dispenser template will be made. There are options here.
For one-time work, a plastic container of suitable dimensions is considered an ideal option. With him, there will be the least fuss: cut off the bottom and fix the stops.
Whatever option you choose, your task is not to forget about a single structural unit. They include the following elements.
- Frame consisting of transverse and longitudinal slats. Its internal width must perfectly match the width of the bricks so that the device fits snugly into the masonry. You can choose the length at your own discretion, but experts do not recommend making the template longer than three elements. The frame can be made fixed, you can set yourself a more difficult task and make the device sliding.
- Borders that limit the height and width of the volume of the applied solution. Needed if the frame beams are not thick enough or your design involves the inclusion of additional parts.
- Stops, whose function is to fix the fixture on the wall masonry. Mounted directly to the frame. Usually on the side.
The design can be supplemented with control devices and auxiliary elements that you deem necessary for work.
By the way, such a template can be made not only for bricklaying. The device is also useful when working with blocks of aerated concrete, cinder block, foam concrete - any material from which walls are built. It is only necessary to take into account the geometric parameters of the corresponding building material in the manufacture of the template.
If you decide to use plastic or wood for the device, all the inner surfaces of the template that will come into contact with the solution should be treated with a wear-resistant parquet (or better, a ship's) varnish. And in several layers. Then you won't have to work on a copy of an already created dispenser.
When part of the work is done, and you take a break until the next day, clean the tool from the solution. Otherwise, it not only wears out faster, but also becomes functionally unusable: the inner working surface no longer meets the specified parameters.
How much the dispenser facilitates the work, you can see after watching the video:
Brick is still one of the main building materials. Good craftsmen are valued in architecture. To make learning the art of building faster, they use various devices for laying bricks. You can make them yourself at home. Many novice brickmakers use such devices to improve their skills.
Make perfect brickwork
main destination
Bricklaying is a very responsible job. Not only the beauty of the future structure depends on it, but also its strength and durability. Therefore, when erecting walls, precision instruments cannot be dispensed with. Many decide to lay bricks with their own hands. Devices that help them in this must be available and in good condition. The necessary tools are divided into 3 groups:
- Main, or main.
- Control and measuring.
- Mechanical.
It is almost impossible to do without tools from the first group.
These include:
- Trowels or trowel. These are special blades of various shapes for applying and leveling the solution.
- Jointing - a device for checking and leveling masonry seams.
- Pickhammer. Fitting and splitting bricks into halves cannot be done without this tool.
In this video, we will consider a device for laying bricks:
The second group is no less important. Without it, it is unlikely that a high-quality wall will turn out. Only very experienced masons can afford to work without measuring instruments, and even then only on frivolous objects. This group includes:
- Plumb. This is a very simple device, but without it, the construction of a perfectly vertical wall is unthinkable.
- The level is one of the most complex building tools. Used to check horizontal planes and lines.
- Wharf - usually a simple cord that is pulled to align the next row of bricks.
- Ordering - a template for laying bricks of various designs. It is used to control the quality of masonry. Various rulers, squares and their modifications can act as this tool.
The third group includes more complex devices for laying bricks.
They are usually made in order to facilitate the work of a bricklayer and make his work better and more efficient.
Here are some of these tools:
- Cuvette. This device helps to evenly distribute the mortar on the next row of bricks.
- Order-dispenser. A tool for laying a certain number of bricks. It usually has vertical and horizontal scales and clamps for a strong fixation.
- Complex dispenser. This is a modified complex device that combines most of the necessary tools for the job.
Without good tools, the final result of the work will be poor or completely unusable. If irresponsibility is allowed in this matter, then a situation may arise that is dangerous to the health and life of those who will use the building.
Application in practice
Even the most experienced masons use many quality control tools in their work. Despite the fact that over the years they have gained tremendous experience, they do not trust their eyes, but regularly check the masonry with the help of precise instruments. It is especially important to use such devices for laying facing bricks, because this type of work requires special care and precision.
Cladding is done to give the building a beautiful appearance. With the help of special bricks or tiles, not only the outer part of the house is decorated, but in many buildings and its internal elements. This is a very complex process. Here are just a few of the difficulties that arise in such work:
- The cladding material is of an unusual configuration. Because of this, difficulties arise with its installation.
- Often the customer requires an original type of cladding, which forces the bricklayer to be very careful and accurate. For laying out unusual shapes, a very precise tool is required.
- The use of solutions with additional components. For example, very often in such cases the joint mixture is tinted, and this, in turn, requires additional attention from the master to the quality of the masonry.
Naturally, when performing such precise work, the measuring instruments must be without flaws. The more often and more responsibly they are used during construction, the greater the guarantee of the performance of work with high final quality.
DIY manufacturing
Various kits are offered by many hardware stores. However, sometimes it is difficult to find something that would fully satisfy the needs of the master. Therefore, many take up the independent production of the desired tool.
To make a level, it is enough to find a good metal cylinder, preferably with a sharp conical nose, and tie it to a thin, strong cord. To check the evenness of the wall, a long straight rail or board is perfect. For convenience, a handle is made on it in the middle part.
The situation is more complicated with how to apply an even layer of mortar on the next row. To do this, make a template for brickwork.
Here is a step-by-step diagram of its manufacture:
- Prepare materials for work and tools.
- From the rails make a frame. In width, it should be such that it fits snugly on the brickwork of the wall being erected. To do this, the longitudinal strips should protrude 5-10 cm compared to the transverse ones.
- The transverse strips are made with a height equal to the height of the applied solution layer. For a brick wall of one and a half bricks, this is 10 cm.
- For convenience, handles are nailed to the sides.
- To protect against corrosion, the product is covered with parquet varnish and regularly cleaned after use.
The use of simple devices greatly facilitates the work of a bricklayer and helps to make the result of his work better and more reliable. Having spent a little time and effort on acquiring such equipment, a novice master will be able to master the basics of the art of bricklaying much faster.
Brickwork is the oldest building technique and the least affected by progress. Today there are robots that build walls, but the price of such a device is comparable to the prices of a team of masons for ten years. As for the working devices, they have changed little since the heyday of Mesopotamia.
Like any complex process, masonry has a general principle that unites everything related to this craft.
The scheme is simple:
- A special solution is applied to a flat base (edge of a foundation or plinth). The most popular option is cement, sand and water with some additives.
- Bricks are placed one by one on this layer until they form a finished section.
- The composition is again applied to the row, stones are placed until the construction is completed.
Thus, from small elements, each of which will be lifted by a child, huge structures are created - this is the principle of brickwork.
Based on this, for her you will need to buy:
- Tools for applying the mixture.
- Devices for cutting (chopping) stone. Not always the length of the row will correspond to the number of whole blocks.
- Scaffolding to rise with the growth of the brick walls.
- Measuring and marking devices.
Basic fixtures
Over the history of construction, the main tool set has not changed:
1. Mason's trowel - trowel. It consists of a flat steel blade the size of a palm and a handle. Unlike a spatula, the blade is attached with a curved rod. Due to this, with respect to the axis of the handle, it is displaced by several centimeters. The handle has a metal cap on the end opposite the blade. The device is needed to lay and level the mixture on the surface of the brick. The steel end of the handle taps the stacked stones.
2. Kirochka or mason's hammer. This is a miniature pick 30-40 cm high with a flat horizontal blade and a narrow rectangular butt. She is split and hewn, the block is upset to the required level.
3. Plumb. The load is on a thin cord, they check the verticality of the masonry.
4. Bubble building level. Thanks to an additional cone, they can be set both horizontally and vertically; often replaces the plumb bob.
5. Right angles are controlled by a square.
6. Measuring tape and carpenter's pencil. Appointment does not require special explanation - measurements and markings.
7. Scaffolding. With each new row, the brickwork rises higher and higher, and it can only be carried out with normal quality to the level of the belt, maximum to the chest. Therefore, you need a reliable device from which you can perform work, and the ability to get higher or lower if necessary.
8. Containers for mortar - the tub is next to the bricklayer. The mixture is carried in buckets, stretchers, and wheelbarrows. With small volumes, they usually manage with one bucket.
Auxiliary set
In the arsenal of a bricklayer there are other devices. You can do without them, but getting high-quality masonry and high prices is much more difficult:
1. Scoop shovel. To accommodate a large amount of mixture. It also serves for filling buckets with mortar, loading wheelbarrows, cleaning the workplace.
2. Ordering with a cord - mooring: a template for even masonry. It also allows you to maintain the same distance between the seams. It consists of two rails, on which small slots are made with a step corresponding to the height of the row. A cord is laid in them, and the slats themselves are attached to both sides of the walls. After the row is filled, the thread is installed in the slot above.
3. Templates. They are usually assembled independently from wire or plywood. Used to get exactly the same seam. They are practically not used for simple masonry, but it is difficult to install decorative bricks, especially on colored mortar, without them.
4. Hydraulic level (water level). A tool for marking constructs by the level of the horizon, as well as by height, in relation to a given mark. The device is necessary, but rather refers to general construction or engineering work at the facility. Nevertheless, an intelligent bricklayer should be able to use it, especially since it is cheaper than a level.
5. Stitching. Narrow steel template for the design of facial seams.
Small mechanization
With a kirochka, you can chip off a brick approximately in size, but exact cutting is much faster to make a “grinder”. Especially when installing decorative stones or walls with decoration elements in a complex pattern.
A concrete mixer will help prepare the solution. In addition to speeding up the process, it is easier to ensure the uniformity of the properties of the mixture with it. This is especially important if fast masonry devices are used. These are frame templates of varying complexity, allowing you to maintain the exact thickness of the layer. The device is placed on the wall at the beginning of the row, filled with a reserve. Then, with the movement of the scraper, the excess is removed, the template is moved further. An even layer remains behind it, on which the block is placed, lightly tapping with the trowel handle.
There are more sophisticated devices that are not limited to maintaining the desired thickness, but also help to accurately lay the brick. They have two main disadvantages:
- Capriciousness in relation to the mixture. Throughout the process, its rigidity should be approximately the same. Otherwise, the same layer of mortar when laying bricks will give different shrinkage, respectively, the thickness of the seam will be different.
- Devices suffer from limited application. As a rule, they are not suitable for tying corners and working with decorative elements.
As a rule, they only interfere with a professional with experience, and a beginner, having got used to it, will not be able to lay blocks normally without them. When laying bricks on your own, if the skills of a bricklayer are not supposed to be mastered seriously, the device can be useful and worth buying. It will also help professionals on simple but long walls, where prices are lower and you need to take it quickly.
Make or buy?
Some devices and tools can be made by yourself. It is easy to assemble the hydraulic level - it is a transparent silicone tube where water is poured. Its length is 8-10 meters, its diameter is about a centimeter. It works on the principle of communicating vessels. No matter how far you spread the ends of the tube, the water in them will be at the same level, forming a horizontal line.
There is no problem to make the simplest plumb line by hanging a suitable weight on a rope. Even the notorious mechanical templates can be built with your own hands from wooden slats, threaded studs and wing nuts; finding a drawing on the net is not a problem. In most cases, it is better to just buy a tool.

Brick is one of the most common building materials. But the arrangement of such masonry implies experience and the use of special tools, which guarantees a quality result. Devices can be homemade or you can purchase a standard version from the assortment available in stores.
Before starting bricklaying, it is necessary to acquire all the necessary building materials and tools
Brick laying tools
To help the bricklayer, a variety of devices are used that allow you to achieve the following advantages:
- The necessary accuracy is ensured - the wall is smooth;
- The labor of the worker is facilitated;
- It has a positive effect on worker productivity.
Hand tool
What a bricklayer will need:
- Trowel or trowel- a small metal spatula in the shape of a triangle on a wood / plastic handle, a trowel allows you to level or remove concrete mortar from the wall, wipe the seams.
- bucket shovel- is involved in the preparation of the connecting solution, also facilitates the application of cement to the bed during large-scale work.
- Level- another common tool, with its help measure the evenness of the wall horizontally. The measurement takes place due to a sealed capsule with an anti-freeze and an air bubble - the air must be exactly in the middle of the capsule, which indicates the correct geometry of the wall.
- Pickhammer- indispensable for splitting building blocks for repair work.
The bricklayer needs a whole set of tools
Popular fixtures:
- plumb line- this is the most primitive measuring device for assessing the vertical evenness of the wall and the quality of the corners - and you can control the height of two or three floors.
- Cord (mooring)- indispensable for assessing the height of the wall, which is important at the preparatory stage, it is also possible to assess the straightness and horizontality of the finished wall.
- Stitching- helps in the formation of the decor of the seam profile when laying the facing material. The seam turns out to be figured, the firmware comes with different dimensions and profiles.
- rule- this is just a flat bar for assessing the evenness of the walls.
- ordering- it is attached to the 1st row, which allows you to predict in advance the location of the next rows of building materials. It is indispensable for the execution of drawings, cladding, control of the placement of openings, etc.
Construction tools for laying bricks
Brick laying devices
Having available materials, for example, polymeric materials, plastic, steel, you can create fixtures for even masonry with your own hands. The main difference from factory-made products will be the method of fastening parts, as well as the durability of the product.
Do-it-yourself dispenser
Laying bricks with a dispenser is easier
One of the most common devices is a dispenser that allows you to accurately apply a binder for building materials. Depending on the dimensions and weight of this material, the thickness of the seam, and hence the volume of the extruded mixture, varies.
The width of the mortar strip corresponds to the geometry of the future wall and is limited by the front strips. The lower level of the stops corresponds to the thickness of the seam. An elementary device is a plywood limiter - for its manufacture it is enough to buy material up to 25 mm thick. We assemble the case according to the specified data, wooden bars or pieces of plywood, metal corners are installed as frontal limits and stops.
Devices for control
Laying a brick with a template is easier - it allows you to dose the volume of mortar to be laid
The template for laying bricks is a special frame with two parallel sides, a handle and steel crossbars. The inner width of the frame is equal to the width of the wall - it can be 1-1.5 or more bricks. At the bottom of the device, on both sides, there are special protrusions that align the block in the wall and at the same time capture the previous row of bricks. The material for the device is plywood or wood slats. In industrial production, metal or plastic can also be used.
For the manufacture of such a design, an old box is most often used - we fix the lower stop bars and a wooden frame with self-tapping screws, when calculating the wall thickness, we take into account the standard seam thickness within 10-12 mm.
Homemade device for laying bricks
Option fixture for laying bricks, made by hand
A home-made device allows you to dose the solution and apply a perfectly even strip of binder to the brick. The device is nothing complicated- for the preparation of such a tool, you will need a metal sheet, the thickness of which will correspond to the required thickness of the seams. We cut a rectangular hole in the sheet, the width of which corresponds to the width of the brick. You can purchase a factory-made dispenser.
The algorithm for its use is as follows: laying a sheet with a hole on the stack, fill the form with a solution, and then level its surface with a trowel, removing excess. As a result, a strip of mortar 10 mm high is obtained on the bed - the wall will exactly correspond to the required dimensions indicated on the drawings.
The solution for connecting blocks is a rather aggressive environment, so it is necessary to protect the devices used. If they are made of plastic or wood, then all internal surfaces in the templates must be treated with wear-resistant ship or parquet varnish. It is better to apply protection in several layers - this will increase the life of the created dispenser.
After the end of the working day, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the tool from the remnants of the binder mixture - this reduces the wear and tear of materials and allows you to maintain internal surfaces in working order. Otherwise, the tool will fail.

- Templates for laying out the mixture on the bed;
- Trowel;
- The shape of the wall in one and a half bricks - 88 mm;
- The shape of the wall in one brick - 65 mm;
- Corner - allows you to check the angular parameters of the wall, a mooring is attached to it;
- Instructions for use, most often in the video version.
