It is noteworthy that the euros issued in Cyprus have inscriptions in Greek and Turkish. The explanation for this is the opening of the borders between the Turkish northern and the Greek southern part of the country. If we talk about Maestro credit cards, as in other tourist countries, they are accepted by ATMs and supermarkets. However, before you go on a trip, it would be nice to ask about the level of interest that is charged when paying with credit cards.
Holidays in the northern region
How to budget when organizing a trip to northern Cyprus? Currency - what to take with you, heading to this region?
Despite some political disagreements with the rest of the country, the people of northern Cyprus are fully aware of the value of developing tourism. In fact, this type of income is one of the main ones for the local population. That's why official currency Cyprus also applies to this part of the country. Not too different here and the level of service. As far as friendliness is concerned, Northern Cypriots are generally more friendly than southern Cypriots.
Seaside cities offer vacationers hotels and hotels for every taste and budget. Here you can easily rent a car, which will allow you to travel around almost the entire country during the day.
Currency
The Turkish lira is the official currency of northern Cyprus. However, as noted above, the local population does not disdain banknotes in the form of euros and dollars. Based on this, it is not recommended to puzzle yourself with unnecessary problems by exchanging money for local lira.
Many cities in northern Cyprus accept checks and credit cards. Moreover, ATMs for cash withdrawal can be seen here at almost every step. The only drawback is the presence of a rather impressive commission when withdrawing money in the amount of about 100 rubles.
In general, the most preferred currency in Cyprus for tourists, regardless of the region, is the euro. Therefore, it is better to bring European banknotes here.
Security
As in other countries, the currency in Cyprus for tourists can be exchanged by hand. However, such a method should be resorted to only in exceptional cases, because such fishing is mainly carried out by scammers who do not miss the chance to get additional profit from a gullible tourist.
The best way to implement currency transactions- cooperation with local banks. At the same time, everything will go smoothly, safely, with the issuance of appropriate receipts, which are recommended to be kept until leaving the country. A document may be required for the reverse exchange of local currency, which is a prerequisite when leaving some countries.
To avoid misunderstandings, before carrying out financial transactions it is worth checking with the cashier in advance the specific amount in local currency that can be received as a result of the exchange. Some local banks charge an impressive commission when providing such services to foreign citizens, which also needs to be clarified.
- If you want to save as much as possible while traveling, it is not recommended to order food and drinks in hotels too often. You can catch up in the evening during the "appearance".
- Numerous local cafes and restaurants offer vacationers the so-called discount hours. Such services concern not only food, but also drinks. Therefore, it is worth once again asking about the availability of such a service.
- In Cyprus, there are plenty of small inexpensive restaurants with good local cuisine. Sometimes it is enough just to move a certain distance from the hotel. You can ask about budget options for food from the locals or pay attention to the places where the Cypriots eat.
- It is better to rent a car or order a taxi for a whole group of people or for several families at the same time.
- Ultimately, buying essentials at home is recommended.
I love the sea and Europe! I was in Cyprus 10 times, in awe of Mallorca and the islands.
When leaving for an unfamiliar country, it is better to find out in advance about its features: culture, climate, tourist routes and what currency to pay with.
Monetary unit of Cyprus
Cyprus is divided into two parts - northern and southern. This is not just a geographical division, these are two separate states, so the monetary unit is also different there. The northern part of the island is controlled by Turkey. The southern side of Cyprus is the independent state "Republic of Cyprus". The unified monetary standard of this region is the euro. The nominal denominations are banknotes from 5 to 500 euros, as well as cents in denominations of 1,2,5,10,20 and 50. But many local merchants also accept dollars.
What was the currency in Cyprus before the euro?
On January 1, 2008, Cyprus, more precisely, only the southern side of the island, joined the euro area. Up to this point, monetary settlements were made in their own currency, it was the Cypriot pound, which was equal to the British sterling. For 1 pound they asked for 2 dollars.
In 2017, the Cypriot authorities issued a decree on the deadline for the exchange, which ended in 2017. Some residents of the island, who for some reason did not have time to exchange old lira for euros, try to slip them to tourists in the form of change in the markets or in small shops, so you should be careful.
Which is better to take: bank card or cash
Local authorities have taken care of the convenience of vacationers, so almost all restaurants, hotels and tour agencies can make non-cash payments. And for Russian and Ukrainian tourists, a pleasant bonus to this is the presence of branches of Promsvyazbank and Privat Bank. This means that payment by cards can be made without deducting interest, and the exchange rate of the euro against the ruble will not be important.
Experienced tourists always change the currency before the trip, because souvenirs and small purchases in local markets can only be paid for in cash, and this can be a problem. When cashing out a card, local banks charge a percentage of several dollars per transaction.
It is better to take both cash, for paying for small purchases, and a card.
Another feature of cashless payments is that if you make a purchase after 10 pm for an amount less than 10 €, then the seller may ask for cash payment.
What currency to take?
The currency in Cyprus for tourists in 2020 in the southern part of the island is the euro. On the official website of the Cypriot bank, you can find out the exchange rate and compare it with the ruble against the euro. This will help to avoid unnecessary costs and exchange the amount for more favorable exchange rate, besides, local banks can charge up to 4% for the exchange.
If you plan to visit neighboring Israel, then dollars should also be available. In this country, only American or local currency - shekels - is accepted for payment.
Information for tourists:
- verify actual exchange rate currency exchange is available on the official website of the Bank of Cyprus.
- here you can see where they are ATMs (ATMs)
Payment by visa, mastercard, ATMs
There is a difference between paying with MasterCard or Visa carats. The point is that on payment system Visa may affect the internal conversion of dollars into euros, which will become an unfavorable option for paying for services. The conversion does not affect MasterCard, and tourists will not pay extra money due to the difference in the price of the currency.
ATMs can be found in bank branches, post offices, shopping centers or just on the street. The ATM itself indicates whether it supports MasterCard system or Visa. The only thing to keep in mind is that you can withdraw no more than 300 euros per transaction, and of course with a commission.
Currency exchange in Cyprus
Currency exchange in any tourist city has several features: it is necessary to change money only in official bank branches, and not with individuals; specify what percentage is charged for services, because it can vary in different places.
It is recommended that even before departure, make sure that the entire necessary amount for the holiday is converted into euros. If during your stay in the country it turns out that there is not enough money, and only rubles are available, then it will be difficult to exchange them, because they will either be accepted at an unfavorable rate or not.
The first exchange office is located right at the airport, but there is no need to rush to change money there, the euro exchange rate will differ from the exchange rate in the city itself. There is no shortage of bank branches on the island, they are in large hotels, shopping centers, post offices and travel agencies. Working hours of the bank branch: from 8 am to 2:30 pm on weekdays, Saturday and Sunday are days off. Exchange offices are open until 20.00 or around the clock.
If there is a need to exchange with a private person, then it must be borne in mind that such operations sometimes end up with counterfeit banknotes being slipped to the tourist. Do not take banknotes of 50 and 100 euros without first examining them.
Current exchange rate
The price for 1 € varies from 75.23 to 75.5 rubles.
Money transfers
On vacation, unforeseen circumstances can occur: you can lose your wallet with all the cash or something can happen to your bank card. This situation can be easily corrected by an urgent money transfer.
It is enough to contact your friends in Russia with a request to transfer the necessary amount, and in 20 minutes it can be picked up. But there is an unspoken rule - it is better if the amount does not exceed 500 euros, because such a system is also available in small exchange kiosks, which may not have more money.
The most popular are worldwide transfer systems Western Union and Unistream. Interest on a single transfer operation can cost up to $30, depending on the amount.
Tax-free return
Tourists making purchases in Cyprus can get 15% of the value of the goods back in the form of a tax refund. The amount spent in one store must be more than 50 euros.
To do this, it is necessary at the airport, already when going through customs, to provide all receipts and purchases in their original packaging. If the purchased goods are luxury items (jewelry, expensive brands of alcohol, etc.), then the refund can be up to 21% of the cost.
You can use the tax refund system only if you do not have citizenship of other countries included in the Schengen agreement.
Currency of Northern Cyprus
The northern side of the island is Turkish, and the Turkish lira (TL) serves as the national currency there. Along with it, payment can be made using euros, dollars and British pounds. This is convenient, because upon arrival you will not need to look for an exchange office and worry about an unfavorable exchange rate. And if there is a need to exchange for the national currency, then the big plus is that almost everywhere the exchange is interest-free.
There is a rule for entering the Turkish part of the island - according to the law, only 500 units of money can be imported there, and it does not matter if it is dollars, yuan or hryvnia. This decision of the authorities appeared due to the crisis in 2013 and still remains in force. At customs, you may be asked to declare the amount available, so a card for traveling in this region is a more convenient and safe option.
How much money to take for a week?
One of the most interesting questions for tourists is how much money to take to Cyprus so that it is enough for everything planned. To plan your budget, consider:
- lunch per person in a mixed cuisine restaurant, excluding alcohol, can be 10-15 €;
- rental of 1 sunbed on the beach 2.5 €, umbrella - 2.5 €;
- local cuisine is a little cheaper: lunch or dinner will cost 7-9 €;
- many restaurants offer discounted lunches;
- fruits are inexpensive: they ask for 1.5-3 € per kilogram, depending on the type;
- a bottle of drinking water with a volume of 1 liter will cost 50 cents, a volume of 2 liters costs 1 €;
- a can of beer costs from 1.5 € and more, and a bottle of wine - from 3.5 €;
- souvenirs cost from 2€.
A tourist who has a rest on the all inclusive program, unlike other programs, will have to spend much less - breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included in the price of the tour. A separate item of expenditure will be only excursions and the purchase of souvenirs.
Individual tours cost from 20 to 50 € per person, but you can save a little on food if the tour runs all day. Take sandwiches and drinking water with you, because along the way, in the most popular tourist places, simple products can cost 1.5 times more.
Going on a trip to a new country, a tourist must be aware of its main features: the capital, climate, attractions, currency. The last aspect is the most important, because in any case, you will have to buy food, pay for an overnight stay, buy souvenirs and so on. If the subject of your next trip is Cyprus, we hasten to tell you what the modern currency of this area is.
We hope that the information below will be useful for tourists and will help you plan your tour budget correctly.
Main currency of Cyprus
From 1879 to December 31, 2007, monetary settlements on the territory of this country were carried out mainly in their own national currency - the Cypriot pound (despite the long-standing rejection of this money, it is rarely, however, found in the general circulation of funds). Previously, the exchange rate of this currency against the dollar was 1:2 (for 1 pound they demanded 2 dollars), the euro - 1:1.7 (for 1 pound - 1.7 euros). Changes came from January 1, 2008 - the euro became the official monetary standard of southern (Greek) Cyprus. In the circulation of the area there are banknotes in denominations from 5 to 50 euros, as well as coins, in 1 and 2 euros, euro cents, in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50.
In the northern (Turkish) part of Cyprus, the official national monetary unit are Turkish Lira. We bring to your attention that along with these funds, settlements are made in euros, dollars, and pounds sterling. Thus, it is not necessary for a tourist, upon arrival, to exchange European currency for Turkish lira.
Bank card payments
Throughout Cyprus, in restaurants, hotels and other public institutions, you can make payments plastic cards Visa and MasterCard. If you are going to buy souvenirs, gifts or accessories, you should get cash at one of the ATMs. The negative point of such an operation is an impressive commission, which can reach 2 dollars or more, for each withdrawal.
A pleasant surprise for the citizens of Russia and Ukraine is the information that Russian and Ukrainian banks, respectively, operate on the island - Privat Bank and Promsvyazbank.
Currency exchange in Cyprus
Special points for exchanging money for local or European currency are present almost everywhere: on the streets, in hotels, restaurants, vehicles, shops, entertainment centers. At some exchange points, you will be required to have a passport. The commission for such an operation is 1-2%. You can exchange personal funds using round-the-clock ATMs. The commission is approximately 4% of the amount. It is more profitable to change money in the Turkish part of Cyprus, since the commission for operations in most points is not charged, and the points themselves work longer.
Starting planning your vacation in a new country, a tourist should first of all find out the current exchange rate. Reliable information about changes in the exchange rate in Cyprus, without leaving your home, can be found on Eurobank Cyprus - the official website of the country's national bank. Various currency converters on resources provide an approximate picture of fluctuations currency funds states. Experienced travelers know that optimal solution is an acquisition, however, greater amount cash.
When exchanging money in special places, we strongly recommend that you carefully check the authenticity of banknotes. This is especially true for banknotes denominated in 100 and 200 euros. It is advisable to always have small coins with you.
How much to expect when vacationing
It is logical to plan your approximate budget before starting a trip. It is quite difficult to determine exactly how much money to take to Cyprus, for example, for 7 days. It all depends on your travel plan, excursions, entertainment, shopping. Naturally, going to an all-inclusive hotel will cut costs considerably, but even then you still need to have several hundred euros in cash. Hotels located away from the main resort areas are cheap compared to those located in close proximity to local tourist routes. In order to roughly plan the budget for the upcoming vacation, we suggest focusing on the following data:
- approximate price of lunch for two adults without alcohol - 20-30 euros, dinner - 30-40 euros;
- fresh vegetables and fruits are relatively cheap. Citrus fruits about 1-2 euros per kilogram;
- clean, drinking water is sold at a price of 0.5-1 euro for a 2-liter bottle;
- alcoholic drinks: wine - from 4 euros, beer - 1-2 euros per bottle;
- You can buy a kilogram of meat and fish in a chain supermarket at a price of 5-8 euros per kilogram.
You can save a lot by eating on your own, buying groceries in supermarkets or grocery stores. A separate cell of expenses is made up of excursions, souvenirs, trips to the theater, cinema, and so on. If you ask an experienced traveler: "how much money to take to Cyprus for 10 days?", Almost everyone will answer: "minimum - 50, maximum - 100 euros per day." Thus, it turns out that, depending on the chosen place, the abundance of rest, the price of a trip for 7-10 days ranges from 350 to 1000 euros.
It is useful for inexperienced vacationers to know that in order to save personal money, it is worth eating in restaurants and cafes remote from popular tourist places. A number of Cypriot food establishments offer their customers mouth-watering discounts and promotions.
Conditions for the return of certain funds
Having made a purchase in one store in the amount of more than 50 euros at a time, the tourist is entitled to a refund of the part of the tax included in the cost of the purchased goods. You can return part of the funds right at the airport, before flying home. To do this, present at the customs a receipt for the product, the product itself in its original packaging and the necessary completed receipts, which are required to be issued in the store where this product was purchased. If all documents are in order, you can count on a refund of 15% of the purchase amount.
What money to take to Cyprus in 2019
Before going on vacation to a new, unknown country, we advise you to exchange your existing cash, rubles, hryvnia, euros, dollars, at home. Find a worthwhile currency exchange, get the necessary amount and quickly go on vacation, travel, tour of this wonderful country.
If your travel budget is already small, in no case do not go to a foreign country only with funds on a bank card. Firstly, it is not a fact that you will be satisfied with the exchange rate available in a bank or exchanger. Secondly, such services charge an impressive commission.
The worst option is to come to Cyprus with cash rubles or hryvnias. These currencies are not very popular in the country, so you will be offered bad course during the exchange.
The official currency of Cyprus is the Euro.
In 2008, the country abandoned the Cypriot national pound (CYP) in favor of the European currency, but sometimes old banknotes can be found in circulation. Officially, they can be exchanged for euros until the end of 2017, but getting change with Cypriot coins will definitely not work (they went out of circulation at the end of 2009). Previously, the rate of the Cypriot pound to the dollar was approximately 1:2 (2 dollars per 1 pound), and to the euro 1:1.7 (1.7 euros per 1 pound). The current exchange rate of Cyprus can be found on the official website of the Bank of Cyprus (Russian version is available).
What currency to take with you to Cyprus
As in any other country participating in the Schengen agreement - the euro. Dollars in Cyprus are also popular, but you can not pay with them everywhere. Be prepared that when exchanging dollars for euros, you will lose a lot. In order not to get into an unpleasant situation, we recommend that you always have euros with you, preferably in small bills (of 1-5 euros).
Cashless payments
ATMs on the island are found at every turn (in banks, hotels, shops, post offices), so taking a lot of cash to Cyprus is not a good idea.
Almost everywhere you can pay by bank Visa cards or Mastercard, but American Express can be difficult.
Buying currency in Cyprus
Experienced tourists exchange rubles for euros in advance, because at airports and exchange points the exchange rate is unfavorable, there are often queues. If you still need to buy currency, it is better to do it in the banks of Cyprus. You will have to pay a commission for the operation (usually no more than 1-2% of the exchanged amount), but you can be sure of the authenticity of the banknotes. To avoid unpleasant surprises, we recommend choosing a bank with a fixed commission (often in Cyprus it depends on the amount being exchanged).
A nice bonus for the Russians will be the presence of Russian banks on the island (for example, Promsvyazbank and Privatbank).
Even experienced travelers, when planning to visit a new country, study the main aspects in advance. If your goal is one of the most beautiful mysterious islands in the Mediterranean - Cyprus, it does not hurt to inquire about its features. In addition to climate, attractions and traditions, you need to know what currency is in the resort, what is the value of the monetary unit. This will help to correctly plan the budget, so as not to overshadow the rest with thoughts about finances.
It's important to know
Since May 2004, this island nation has been a member of the European Union. Now the official currency for the republic is the euro. The government abandoned the national currency - the Cypriot pound (CYP) in 2008, and by the end of 2017, local money went out of use, giving way to European ones.
On the territory of the republic, paper banknotes with a face value of 5 to 500, coins of 1 and 2 euros and change money - euro cents (from 1 to 50) are in circulation.
Interesting Facts:
- on Cypriot money, the name of the country is duplicated in Turkish and Greek;
- cents of each denomination depict certain sights and objects of national pride of the islanders.
- In May 2019, the European Central Bank will issue banknotes of 100 and 200 euros with the image of Cyprus.
Currency of South Cyprus
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus controls only 60% of the territory. In everyday life, this part is called the South or Greek, since the main population is ethnic Greeks. The rest of the lands are under the authority of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Although the independence of this "republic" is not recognized in the world, the fact remains. And the political situation determines a number of territorial features. One of them is the different currency of the island.
It turns out that what money you need to take with you depends on the part of the island chosen for the trip.
So, the southern lands are an officially recognized state within the European Union. Therefore, the only legal currency here is the euro. If your trip is limited to the Greek half, you can not carry any other means.
But in the north, things are a little more complicated. Or vice versa?
Currency of Northern Cyprus
In the north of the island, Turkey controls the power, and the vast majority of the inhabitants are Turks. It is easy to assume that and National currency on the northern part - the Turkish lira (YTL).
However, the peculiarity of this area is that along with the official currency, US dollars, euros and even pounds sterling are used.
Thus, if you have been vacationing in the south and suddenly decide to visit the north, it is not necessary to change euros to Turkish liras.
Currency exchange
When planning a trip, Russians are advised to immediately change rubles in their homeland. This can be done at the nearest bank. If you do not have time to exchange money, then serious problems await you at the resort. In most institutions, operations to receive the ruble are simply not performed. You can rent rubles at single points, and at an unfavorable rate.
As for the American dollar, in the northern lands it can be paid almost everywhere without resorting to exchange. In the southern part, dollar payments are not accepted everywhere. When paying, the seller recalculates the price from euros, and the coefficient is not taken in favor of the buyer.
It is easy to exchange dollars: for the convenience of tourists, exchange offices are located at the airport. There are also exchange points at almost every hotel and shopping center. Bank points are usually open from 8 am to 1 pm. Private exchangers - up to 20 hours, and some around the clock.
Before exchanging money, check the exchange rate and percentage for the operation. Choose items with a rate of no more than 2%. And do not forget to take your passport with you - the operator may ask you to show it.
Avoid money exchange with private individuals! You may be given counterfeit banknotes (usually in denominations of 100 or 200 €).
Current exchange rate
Given the instability of politics and economics, exchange rates are constantly undergoing changes. You can find the current course on the website. By the way, it also has a Russian version.
Rates according to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation Rates according to the National Bank of UkraineWhich is better to take: bank card or cash
Many modern tourists avoid taking large amounts of cash with them on foreign trips. And there is a reason for this. Firstly, carrying a bundle of banknotes with you is uncomfortable, and secondly, it is dangerous.
Card payments
Convenient and smart alternative credit card. The owners of credit cards of the Visa, MasterCard and Maestro systems on the island have "open doors" everywhere. Even if the account is only rubles. The card can be used to pay for hotel accommodation, dinner at a restaurant, shopping in stores, car rental and other expenses.
When you travel with a card, take some cash with you. Souvenir sellers and tour guides will certainly demand cash. Plus, in a cafe you will need to give a tip if you do not want to seem rude. Of course, you can withdraw money from the card at any terminal. But they charge a hefty fee for this.
Cash
Ask anyone who has already been to this island if they accept dollars here. You will get an unequivocal answer: yes, but it is better to take euros with you. You can not pay with dollars everywhere, and the exchange rate is unfavorable.
If you plan to pay cash for goods and services on your trip, try to carry mostly small bills.
Banknotes in denominations of 200, 500 € will only come in handy when buying expensive things (for example, a natural fur coat). If such events are not planned, stock up on banknotes no higher than 100. Money of a larger denomination causes concern among sellers, as they are often counterfeited. There is a chance that the store will not have change from a large amount. Locals are very afraid of fakes.
For current spending, prepare running fives, tens and twenties. Coins also do not interfere as a tip to the waiters.
How much money to take on a trip
If we are talking about a package tour, then the cost of flight and accommodation with meals is already included in the price. This means that money is needed only for additional expenses (excursions, shopping, entertainment).
If you plan an independent trip, experienced tourists are advised to choose the off-season. Then plane tickets can be purchased at budget prices, and hotels reduce the cost of living. So, if in the season a round-trip flight costs about 300 €, then in the off-season you can fly to the resort for almost 100. The same situation with hotels. A four-star room (40 €) can be rented cheaper out of season.
An additional way to save money is to book tickets and rooms well in advance of the trip.
So, how much money to take for current expenses.
Fare
If you arrive at Paphos airport, then it will be expensive to get to any resort by taxi. Unless, of course, you stay to rest in Paphos itself. In other cases, it is more profitable to land in Larnaca.
You can move around the island by bus. Prices for intracity routes - from 1.5 €, for long-distance routes - from 4.7. You can save money by purchasing a weekly pass.
A popular tourist transport is rented cars. Daily rent can cost from 20 to 35 €, depending on the season and the car company. The price is reduced when ordering a rental for several days. Plus, you will need to pay for fuel (about 1.25 € per liter).
Nutrition
If you eat in establishments of the middle segment, the daily ration per person will be from 10 to 20 €. In a simpler cafe, these expenses can be reduced to 5-10 €. Fans of expensive restaurants will have to spend up to 30 € per day.
If you are on the island for the first time, do not overdo it with fashionable establishments. It is better to leave this pleasure for the last days, when there is confidence in the remaining budget.
Almost every cafe and restaurant in this resort has its own discount hours. Try to find them in the nearest establishments. During the discount period, you can eat just as tasty, but cheaper.
Entertainment
Good news: all beaches in the resorts are free. For an umbrella and a deck chair you will be charged about 5 €.
Visiting water parks on the island will cost a lot. From 30 € is an adult ticket, from 17 - for children. True, the impressions will remain for a long time!
As for group excursions, their cost varies from 50 to 70 €. If you want to see the sights on your own, each visit will cost from 2.5 to 5 €. A three-day subscription to all the monuments of antiquity will help save money.
Souvenirs
Something will have to be spent on souvenirs for loved ones. Popular gifts include:
- olives and olive oil;
- local wines;
- carob products;
- halloumi cheese;
- silverware;
- icons.
Any of the listed goods is presented in the markets in a different price range. Make a list of "recipients" in advance, ask the price and get a rough estimate for the purchase of souvenirs.
There is another way to cut your travel budget. All goods in EU countries are already priced with VAT. When a foreigner purchases a product and exports it outside the European Union, he is entitled to a tax refund.
By system Tax Free a foreign buyer can return up to 20% of the purchase price upon departure. What are the conditions:
- The product was purchased in a store participating in the system.
- The purchase amount was at least 50 €.
- The buyer completed the voucher received from the seller.
- The goods receipt has been saved.
So, in order to get back part of the cost of goods purchased at Tax Free, you need to provide the customs officer with a passport, voucher and check when leaving. If the customs officer asks to see the exported goods, you are obliged to do so.
The tax surcharge will be transferred to the bank account. For cash, please contact the office tax refunds right there at the airport.
