Beer can burner. Homemade burner alcohol lamp from beer cans Do-it-yourself beer can burner
From a couple of empty cans, you can assemble a light and functional alcohol burner with your own hands.
Knowing how to make an alcohol burner can help you in emergencies, long expeditions, or when you want to impress your friends.
Step 1: Tools and Materials
We will need:
- 2 aluminum cans
- wooden boards (one about 2 cm thick and several thinner)
- stationery knife
- a pair of pushpins
- screwdriver
- pliers, preferably fine-tipped
- coin
- ignition fluid (e.g. methanol, isopropyl alcohol did not perform well)
Step 2: assembling the can cutter
First, we need to assemble a can cutter that will cut the cans in a straight line. As a last resort, you can just use scissors, a knife, etc., but it will be much better if you have a good clean cut.
The saw is a regular utility knife blade, fixed to the board with buttons. We will need two boards of different thicknesses: about 2 cm for the upper part, and about 3 cm for the lower part - the burner body.
Be careful when cutting and with the cut can - the metal can be very sharp.
Step 3: cut the cans
In this step, we will cut two beer cans by creating the burner pieces. As mentioned above, the top will be about 2 cm high and the bottom 3 cm high.
Use a file or tools at your disposal to cut the bottom of the cans. Using your fingers, gently twist the top of the can to separate it where the blade enters. After dividing the cans into parts, smooth out the sharp edges with a decoction, a file or sandpaper.
Step 4: Prepare the burner
The smaller tin will be the burner. Use a pin to make 6 small holes around the perimeter of its base. An even distribution of holes will give the product a neat look and slightly improve its performance, but in general it has only aesthetic value. It is important that the holes are on the sides as this will help heat the outer container, which then heats the fuel.
Then punch one center hole, make a pilot hole with a pin, and expand it with a screwdriver or whatever is available. The hole should be about 0.5 cm in diameter, but if you get a wider hole, it's okay.
Next, make 6 large holes along the rim of the can, each under a small hole. You can use a screwdriver for this, but do not make the holes too large. It is very important not to damage the edge of the can, as it will connect to the second part of the can.
Fold the rim of the can inward at twelve evenly spaced points, one fold for each hole and one between the holes. As a result, we will get a pleasant relief.
Step 5: Assemble the burner
We are now ready to put both parts of the burner together. Insert the smaller part into the larger one, bottom up. It is very important that the parts connect evenly.
Step 6: refuel and ignite the burner
For the burner to work, you need to fill it with fuel. The idea is that the fuel heats up, some of it evaporates and then ignites.
Place a coin over the center hole first. Next, pour the fuel into the small cup that you get after you have closed the center hole (this cup is used as a measuring part). Remove the coin so that the fuel flows down to the bottom. Leave a small amount of fuel on the outer rib, you will ignite it to "fire up" the appliance.
The outer part will begin to heat up from the fire, this will cause the fuel inside to begin to evaporate.
After firing up, the side nozzles will also light up. The coin will act as a pressure valve, periodically the burner will lightly toss the coin, releasing excess of it.
At this point, check for leaks between the nozzles - if the two parts of the device are not sealed properly, you may have to adjust poorly crimped parts.
If you need to extinguish the burner, then quickly remove the coin from the hole (with a knife, stick or something else) and the fire will go out.
If you are using the burner on snow, you can use another can as an extra bottom to insulate the bottom of the burner.
Alas, the idea of making a burner from a can of cola (beer or other drink) is not mine, but still I decided to make a more detailed article on how to make a burner with my own hands.
To make a mini burner you will need:
Two (you can use any can: beer, juice, kvass, in general any);
- Pliers;
- Scissors;
- Glue;
- Coin;
- Alcohol.
Let's start implementing the idea!
First of all, you need to rinse the cans (updated).
Do the same with the second can.
We make the burner directly.
Further, after we already have two parts, we need to connect the two parts as shown in the image. After that, you need to glue the two parts with super glue, or better, cold welding. Next, you need to clean the can of paint (so as not to catch fire during burning).
Making holes in a circle
Now all that remains is to make holes in the can, as shown in the picture (in a circle and in the middle). The holes in the middle are needed to pour fuel through them. We put the coin in the middle of the jar so that the flame does not come out through these holes.
Everything is ready! You can try a homemade burner in practice
Now you just need to pour alcohol into the jar and set it on fire.
The burner is ready for use.
You can make it very quickly from scrap materials and use it on a hike, outdoors or in the country to warm up food;)
From just two aluminum cans, you can make a simple and reliable burner that will help out both the tourist and the hunter. Unlike commercial burners, it is small in size and light in weight. In addition, it can be made from improvised means.
In order to make a burner from a beer can, we need:
- Two half-liter aluminum beer cans;
- Stationery knife or scissors;
- Awl;
- Sandpaper;
First you need to sand the bottom of the paint cans with sandpaper. If the paint is not cleaned off, then in the future it will smoke and melt.
It should look something like this:
Now you need to cut off the bottom of the cans, about 3 centimeters high. You can do this using a clerical knife (after fixing it in a vice - so that the level of the cut is at the same height) or scissors. Sand the edges to get rid of the burrs.
We got two identical aluminum cups. Now we will need to insert these cups into each other.
There may be a slight difficulty here. The fact is that they are of the same diameter, and although aluminum is a soft material and can deform, you need to try. The easiest way to do this is to put one cut-off bottom over an entire beer can, causing it to expand slightly, and then insert the second part.
In the center of our burner from beer cans, we will need to make several holes through which we will pour alcohol (you can get by with one large one - about 3 mm). It will also act as an overpressure valve and will not damage the burner. Along the perimeter, at an equal distance, we make about 20 holes, through which the lighted vapors of alcohol will come out.
The beer can burner is ready:
Burner start
Pour in about 30 ml of alcohol and close the central holes with a coin. If excessive pressure forms inside, it will toss a coin and the burner will not explode.
After holding the burner a little over a lighted match (this is necessary in order for the alcohol to begin to evaporate), set it on fire and rejoice at the result.
Here's a short video:
Important:
- Alcohol is a flammable liquid, be careful and observe safety regulations.
- The burner body heats up.
- Do not put any flammable substance other than alcohol into the burner.
- Do not completely fill the burner with alcohol - it may explode.
Using such a burner, you can easily boil half a liter of water for 7-10 minutes. 30 ml of alcohol burns for about 20 minutes. Ideal for a tourist or hunter to make tea or pour boiling water over the noodles.
The idea of an alcohol burner from a tin or aluminum can is not new. Such a device has long been used by hunters and fishermen in nature in order to warm up a mug of tea or cook food without making a fire, and in domestic conditions, an alcohol lamp for the same purposes often helps out in the event of a power outage. It is very simple to make an alcohol burner from a can, and if you experiment with its modification, you can adjust the height of the flame tongues, the duration of combustion, as well as the amount of heat released during the combustion of fuel. You can learn more about how to make a burner with your own hands.
To make the simplest alcohol lamp, you will need two aluminum cans of beer or any carbonated water. To prevent a beer can burner from smoking and melting when burning, it is necessary to sand its surface with sandpaper to get rid of the paint. Then you need to cut a part of each of the cans, about 3 cm from the bottom, with a clerical knife. The cutting line should be straight, so you can use a marker attached to a 3 cm board to draw this line, or fix a clerical knife in a vise, while twisting the can, cutting off the desired part. The sharp edges of the cut off part need to be sanded.
The resulting two identical parts of the cans must be connected by inserting one into the other. Since they have the same diameter, it can be difficult to connect. insert one into the other so that there is no gap between them. Since aluminum is easy to deform, before cutting off the second workpiece, you can stretch the cut off, finished part of the future spirit lamp on the bottom of a whole can, thus expanding its edges to the desired diameter.
After both parts are connected, holes need to be made around the perimeter of the upper part of the spirit lamp with an awl or drill 1-2 mm. There can be 18-20 of them with the same distance between them. In order for the flames to rise upward, the edges of the holes need to be slightly bent upward. At the top of the burner, you need to make several holes 3 mm in diameter for pouring alcohol and adjusting the internal pressure of the container.
You can simply pour alcohol inside the burner, or you can put a cotton pad there so that it is saturated with it.
A do-it-yourself beer can burner works very simply: 30 ml of alcohol is poured inside, the inlets in the center of the top are closed with a coin. The bottom of the spirit lamp is heated with a match, alcohol vapors ignite, forming tongues of flame emerging from the holes made around the perimeter.
To make it convenient to heat water or food on the burner, you need to make a dish support. To do this, you need to use a slightly larger jar, for example, from under canned food. On it, you need to mark two lines: one at the height of the burner, the second at a height, twice the length of the burner. The top of the can is cut off and its walls are divided into 12 vertical cuts. Of this number, you need to leave six pieces, cutting off the extra ones after one. In the center of the bottom, you need to make a hole for heating, and bend the remaining strips inward to the bottom. The stand is ready, all that remains is to place an alcohol burner inside it.
Tin can burner
Besides the fact that beer cans can be used, an alcohol lamp can be made from a regular tin can. An excellent burner is also made from a can of coffee or brewed tea with a tight-fitting lid.
The principle of making a burner from a can is similar to that described above:
- Several holes are made in the lid for pouring alcohol.
- Next, you need to make holes along the diameter of the upper edge of the can at a distance of 1-1.5 cm. They should have a diameter of about 1 mm and the edges bent upward at an angle. This is necessary so that the alcohol vapors are directed upward.
- The ignition of the can is carried out in the same way as for beer, with pre-closed holes on the top using a coin.
In principle, an open alcohol burner can be made without the need for a lid. To do this, you need to insert a sheet of tin into it, rolled up in a circle with a diameter smaller than the walls of a tin can. Inside the resulting circle in the center, alcohol is poured and set on fire.
As with any flammable substance, handling alcohol requires caution. You cannot fill the jar with it to the top, otherwise it may explode. It is not recommended to use fuels other than alcohol. The burner must not be installed on a table at home, as it can catch fire, and in general, when using an alcohol lamp in everyday life, it is necessary to use a stand for both the burner itself and the dishes. To extinguish an alcohol lamp, it is necessary to stop the access of oxygen to the burning vapors of alcohol; for this, you can cover it with a tin lid on top. Do not use the burner to heat small synthetic tents.
Surely many have already seen an alcohol burner from an aluminum can. One author suggested how it could be improved to make it safer and more convenient. Now the burner will never explode when heated, as it has a special safety valve. In addition, the flame has become more beautiful and even, which increases the efficiency of the burner. As a result, the burner now looks like a regular kitchen burner.
Materials and tools for assembly:
- an aluminum can for beer and other drinks (the author uses narrow cans from Mio, as he makes a small kerosene stove);
- cotton pads, cotton cloth or sponge;
- a jar of larger diameter (used for olives);
- coin;
- raw food and a frying pan (you can fry eggs to check).
For work, you will need such tools: scissors, a lighter, a needle with an awl (instead of an awl, a sharp nail will do), pliers, a bolt with nuts or a self-tapping screw.
Let's start assembling the alcohol burner:
Step one. Cut out the first burner element
The first burner element must be cut out of the can; for this, 17 mm must be retreated from the bottom. After that, a circular line is drawn with a marker. To keep the line straight, the marker can be fixed at the desired height, and then rotated the jar.
Now this part needs to be carefully cut along the drawn line. In total, two jokes are needed for such spare parts, one should be 17 mm high, and the second 25 mm.
Further, in the cut out bottom, you need to make holes, keeping a distance of 4-5 mm between them. In this case, it is important that the distances in diameter are approximately the same. For these purposes, you can use an awl or a nail. It is most convenient to punch holes on the plank.
In the end, everything should be as seen in the photo. Larger holes will increase the flame.
Another large hole must be made in the center of the bottom. It should be smaller in size than a coin.
Step two. We connect two elements together
In the bottom, which is 25 mm, you need to put a cotton cloth. It can be cotton wool or cotton pads. Next, the bottom with holes must be put on over the bottom with cotton wool. They need to be connected so that there is no skew. The edges can be tucked in with a piece from the same can.
Step three. Burner testing
Alcohol or other liquid fuel, such as gasoline, must be poured into the burner through the large hole. Next, the hole is closed from above with a coin. The coin is needed so that the burner does not explode under excessive pressure. If there is an excess of pressure in the burner, the coin will simply be displaced and excess gases will escape from the burner without bursting it.
To start the bottom of the burner, you need to heat it with a lighter or matches, and then set fire to the vapors that will come out of it. Well, then the burner will heat itself up and burn like that as long as there is fuel in it.
Step four. Making a cover for extinguishing the burner
In addition to extinguishing the burner, the cover also prevents fuel from evaporating from it when it is not on. To make a lid, you will need another jar, from which you need to cut off the bottom.
In the center of the bottom, then you need to drill a small hole and screw in a self-tapping screw.
Step five. How to make a dish rack
To turn a burner into a kerosene stove, you need to make a dish support. For these purposes, you will need a jar of a slightly larger diameter. To determine the height of the stand, you first need to make a mark on the can at the height of the burner. Further, this length must be doubled and the desired centimeters must be added, on which the dishes will be located from the burner.
Then the jar needs to be divided into 12 parts with a marker, the excess is cut off along the circular line. Each line must be cut to the bottom ring. Then the resulting strips are cut off through one, as a result, such a design is obtained, as in the photo.
You need to cut a hole in the stand, it is needed in order to heat the burner at startup. The strips must be bent so that they rest against the bottom, thereby increasing the rigidity of the stand. That's all, then the burner is inserted into the stand and you can start cooking.
