Android drink with which banks it works. What cards does Google Pay support: a list of available options
Innovative banking payment technologies are gradually moving around the world, coming to new countries. Russia is next. Since May 23, 2017, the long-awaited launch of Google Pay in Russia, which was previously called Android Pay, took place. In this article, we will talk about all the pros and cons of the payment system, figure out how to connect and configure Google Pay and which banks and smartphones support this technology.
Google Pay - what kind of technology and why is it needed?
Google Pay is a payment platform for Android smartphones from the famous American corporation Google, which was launched for the first time in 2015. Today, this payment technology is already working in such large countries as the USA, Great Britain, Australia, Singapore, etc.
Many people ask what is the essence of this technology? Google Pay allows you to pay for your daily purchases using a smartphone or smart watch on the Android operating system in a contactless way, having previously “linked” a bank card of a bank that supports this technology.
The Google Pay payment platform is similar in principle to Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. But unlike the above systems, it has a number of advantages.
Pros and cons of a payment service
In order to understand how convenient this platform is and whether it is worth using it, you need to understand what are its advantages and disadvantages of payments through the NFC module on the phone.
To begin, consider advantages of contactless paymentsGooglePay:
- No need to carry plastic bank cards with you. For payments, it is enough to use your smartphone, without which most modern people do not leave home.
- One smartphone instead of several payment cards. That is, you can “link” cards of several banks to Android Pay and, when paying, decide which card you want to make a payment from.
- The principal advantage of Android Pay, unlike Apple and Samsung Pay, is that this system not tied to a specific brand of smartphone. The main thing is that the smartphone should be on the Android operating system. And in the world of such smartphones, there are about 85% of the entire smartphone market.
- Payment speed. Paying physically with a bank card usually takes much longer than contactless payment.
- Payment security. Now this is one of the main aspects of the use of new payment technologies. Unlike paying with a bank card, firstly, they will not be able to copy a bank card from you, and secondly, the payment is confirmed using a fingerprint or a special code. In addition, the transfer of data during payment occurs in encrypted form and is reliably protected from fraudsters.
- In addition to bank cards, you can add most loyalty, discount and other cards that you usually carry in your wallet to the GPay application.
Cons of a contactless payment platform:
- Unfortunately, so far Not all stores have a contactless payment system. But every year, the number of banks that support the novelty from Google and the number of payment points that accept contactless payments, including Google Pay, is growing very quickly.
- It is not possible to use the technology to withdraw cash. At least most ATMs in Russia are not configured to read contactless gadgets.
- Ended charging on the smartphone - left without money. If you constantly use only a smartphone as a means of payment, and if the charging on the gadget runs out, you can be left without a means of payment.
So, in order to connect Google Pay, you need to have a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express bank credit or debit card in a bank that supports this technology, and also have a gadget technically suitable for contactless payment.
Banks supporting Google Pay in Russia
So which banks support GPay? As of May 23, 2018, you can connect cards of the following banks:
- Sberbank
- Opening
- Promsvyazbank
- Dot
- MTS Bank
- Binbank
- Rosselkhozbank
- Yandex money
- Some regional banks...
Every month the number of banks connected to the system is certainly increasing. A more detailed and up-to-date list? as well as which cards can be added to the application can be found on the official website.
Devices that support paymentGoogle Pay
As already mentioned, unlike Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, the main condition for using the new technology is the Android operating system version 4.4 and higher, as well as the presence of an NFC module in the smartphone (a chip for contactless payment).
Attention! Many have encountered such a problem that Google Play either does not find the corresponding application, or a message appears: "Not supported on your device." This message is usually seen by those who bought their smartphone through Aliexpress. The fact is that on such gadgets, as a rule, there are not official firmware or root access is open. Therefore, on such devices, installing the GPay application will not work (This applies to such Chinese brands as MEIZU, Xiaomi, Elephone, etc. purchased not in Russia).
The most affordable smartphones with NFC module today are released by the company HUAWEI branded as HONOR. I myself am the owner of the gadget of this brand and I can say that contactless payments are made without any problems. Everything is just perfect, unlike other Samsung brands, where glitches and freezes are very common.
How to use Google Pay
So, if you have a card from a supported bank and a smartphone on the platform of the same name with an NFC module, then to pay with your smartphone you need to:
- Download the official Google Pay app from the Google App Store.
- In the application settings, add "link" a bank card of a supporting bank.
- Set the main card for payments in the application settings (For example, if you have added several cards)
- Also, in the settings of the NFC module of your smartphone, you must select the "Default" application for contactless payment. Choose Google Pay.
Directly in the store, payment is carried out in a standard way. When the cashier asks you to insert your card, you must unlock your smartphone and reverse side smartphone to bank terminal. Payment will be made from the bank card that you specified as the main one in the GPay application. If, at the time of payment, you want to make a payment from your other card, then simply open the GPay application, select one of the added cards and bring your phone to the terminal.

How is Android Pay different from Samsung and Apple?
At the moment, there are 3 largest contactless payment systems in the world, this is Android Pay described in this article, as well as the Apple Pay payment system and the Samsung Pay system.
All three payment systems are very similar to each other, they use almost the same technology, use similar security systems and payment methods.
But here it is worth noting Samsung Pay, which has one key advantage, in addition to payments using NFC, payment using the electronic system from Samsung can also be made on old conventional terminals that do not support contactless payment. This is achieved through proprietary technology - magnetic stripe card emulation (MST).
The advantages of the Android Pay system include the presence of a built-in binding of loyalty cards (bonus cards) to the application. Thus, you do not need to carry numerous bonus cards with you, just launch the application, select the required loyalty card (and often google will show you the required card, according to your coordinates) and show it to the seller to read the barcode. And if bonus card supports Balance Rewards or Coke MyRewards technology, bonus points will be credited to them automatically upon payment

Which cards are supported by Android Pay in Russia
What cards does Android Pay support? Users face this issue at the initial stages of using a mobile application from Google. The company is upgrading the system and making updates to correct deficiencies. In Russia, the technology appeared in early 2017. Not all banks have implemented a function for connecting credit cards to non-cash payment.
Supported banking products
Android Pay works on the territory of the country. This feature is not available for all devices. The corporation provided access to the technology, and whether to accept it or not is a question for financial structures.
The advantages of using a cashless module are as follows:
- Fast sync with payment terminal.
- Calculation in 1 second.
- No need to carry bank details with you.
- Support for smartphones and smart watches.
Important! Stay tuned for updates, as a program that is not updated in time creates problems with paying through the phone.
Card formats for Android Pay
You can add and bind objects in the following formats:
- Visa.
- mastercard.
So far, only two systems are available in the country. The Mir payment format has not yet been converted to support NFS payments.
How to check if a feature exists
Before connecting an object in an application, you must complete the following steps:
![](https://i2.wp.com/rv-mo.ru/800/600/https/androidpays.ru/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/znachok-nfc-na-telefone.png)
If the answer is positive for all check points, the card will quickly connect and activate.
System requirements
For stable operation, the following supported parameters are required:
- single-core processor with a clock frequency of 1 gigahertz;
- RAM from 1 gigabyte;
- free space on the device from 100 megabytes;
- mobile internet connection.
Additionally, to support all available cashless payment functions, an Android operating system of version 4 or higher is required.
Now you know the main reasons for the inability to link different card formats when using contactless payment technology through the application. In the article, we described the possibilities of using Android Pay, talked about what is required to connect new bank cards.
Android Pay is a contactless mobile payment service developed by Google. It allows you to pay for purchases by touching the terminal with your phone in regular stores, as well as pay in mobile applications. Russia became the 11th country where Android Pay was launched. The service will be available to Visa and MasterCard holders.
In Russia, the Android Pay payment service has been launched, which allows you to pay for purchases using smartphones based on the operating system of the same name.
To use Android Pay, you need a smartphone or tablet running Android version 4.4 KitKat or higher and supporting NFC technology. Tokenization technology is used to protect transactions: neither card data nor user data is stored on the device.
We are seeing a big increase in the popularity of mobile payment requests.
“We see a big increase in the popularity of requests for payment using mobile devices, - said Dmitry Kuznetsov, director of marketing at Google in Russia, at the presentation of the service. - Any bank can come to us at any time and conclude a partnership agreement.” Google expects that in two years all terminals in Russia will be equipped with a contactless payment function. The company is optimistic about the future of the service, as, according to its data, 66% of people use smartphones to make purchases.
“Android Pay works wherever Visa contactless card payments are accepted,” says Ekaterina Petelina, CEO of Visa in Russia. According to Visa, most often contactless technology payment is used in grocery stores (69%), supermarkets and hypermarkets (53%), clothing stores (51%), pharmacies (50%) and gas stations (38%). In turn, for MasterCard, Russia has become the fifth country in Europe that allows you to add cards from your banks to the Android Pay service. At the same time, Android Pay can be paid with a linked MasterCard in 96 countries.
Clients of 14 banks can upload their cards to Android Pay: Sberbank, Alf-Bank, VTB 24, Promsvyazbank, Binbank Digital, Binbank, Russian Standard, Rosselkhozbank, Raiffeisenbank, Rocketbank, Otkritie, Ak Barsa, " Tinkoff, MTS Bank and Yandex.Money service.
Banks already have a positive experience with phone payment services
Banks already have a positive experience with phone-based payment services - an iPhone service called Apple Pay was launched late last year, almost simultaneously with Samsung Pay for phones of the same name. In particular, according to Sberbank, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay increase conversion by 10 percentage points, up to 90%, with an average value of 80%.
« 13.9 million Sberbank customers access the Sberbank Online (SBOL) mobile application using Android smartphones. At the moment, 30% of customers who use the SBOL application on Apple and Samsung smartphones of the required technical configuration (NFC chip, the latest version of the operating system) have connected to Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. It's about about 1 million people. To date, these clients have completed 13 million transactions,” says Svetlana Kirsanova, Senior Managing Director of the Retail Business Block at Sberbank.
Currently, 70% of Sberbank's POS terminals support payment by phone, and the bank plans to increase this figure to 100% by the end of the year. Binbank went a little further (which is not surprising given the difference in network coverage), whose entire network of POS terminals (more than 22,000 devices) is already configured to accept Android Pay.
Alfa-Bank has also been working with Apple Pay and Samsung since last fall. With the launch of Android Pay, the bank came up with an additional option. “For additional convenience and security, we offer our customers a unique functionality - in the Alfa-Mobile mobile application, you can block a plastic card in case it is lost or stolen, while leaving Android Pay active. Thus, the client will not be left without funds, even if the plastic itself is lost, ”comments Vladimir Urbansky, head of the Electronic Business block at Alfa-Bank.
In turn, Rocketbank considers the technology itself promising, which allows you to pay for purchases using your phone without taking out your wallet. The bank does not rely on a specific platform, but "believes in the technology as a whole." “Half of the people use Rocketbank on iOS, and half of them use Apple Pay to pay. Samsung Pay refers exclusively to Samsung phones and not to the Android platform as a whole. According to our data, a third of Samsung phone owners use this feature,” says Anton Bondarev, director of products at Rocketbank.
Yandex points out that using the Yandex.Checkout service, companies can set up acceptance of payments via Android Pay in mobile applications. At the same time, for an online store or service, payment via Android Pay will look like a regular purchase from a bank card.
If you have an Android phone, then I have good news, Android Pay payments have been launched in Russia, you can try to pay directly from your phone without taking your card out of your wallet. In principle, it was possible to pay for purchases using an Android smartphone before, for example, Tinkoff Bank supports such operations, but for this you need to launch the application every time, confirm the payment, performing unnecessary actions.
What banks support?
So far, the list of banks consists of such organizations, later it will grow.
- "Alfa Bank";
- "Ak Bars Bank";
- "Binbank" (at the time of launch only MasterCard);
- "VTB 24";
- "MTS Bank";
- "Opening" (including "Rocketbank" and "Point");
- "Promsvyazbank";
- "Raiffeisenbank";
- "Rosselkhozbank";
- "Russian Standard" (only MasterCard at the time of launch);
- "Sberbank";
- "Tinkoff Bank";
- "Yandex.Money" (only MasterCard).
What phones are supported?
I’m tormented to list all Android smartphones here, the main thing is that NFC support is present, and the phone has Android 4.4 and higher. In addition, the list of requirements includes the presence of official firmware, no custom. Also, the phone must be without root and without an unlocked bootloader. If you don’t know what it is, that’s great, and if you have already managed to delve into the stuffing of the phone, then don’t be surprised that there may be problems.
NFC works in most mid-range phones, but there are problems with budget models, there are not so many options with NFC. Of course, if you have a top Galaxy or Xiaomi, then this issue is not discussed, you will have NFC.
Accordingly, do not forget to enable NFC in the settings. And don't worry, this feature won't drain your battery.
Where to get the application?
In theory, the program can be found on Google Play, but at the time of preparation of the material, the utility could not be found by searching. I think that after the official launch there should be no problems. Here is the link to the Android Pay app.
How to set up the phone?
The process of setting up the phone is simple, just enter the CVV code and that's it - the application will take the rest of the card data from your Google account if you have previously added a card for purchases on Google Play. If not added, then the process will be a little longer. Open the application, enter the card details: number, owner's name, CVC code. Or use the camera for this, the phone itself will scan everything without any extra actions.
You may also need to enter your fingerprint and PIN to confirm the action for added security.
You can enter several cards, and when paying, select the one you need in the application.
Do you need to pay for anything else?
No, the service is free, there are no commissions or subscription fees.
Where can I shop?
Yes, in principle, anywhere, as long as the terminals support the PayPass and PayWave systems. Bring the phone to the terminal and pay, for purchases up to 1000 rubles, a PIN code is not required, but sometimes you need to indicate it or sign on the receipt. If the operation was successful, you will hear a signal confirming the payment. Then an SMS with the rest of the money on the balance will come, if, of course, such a service is connected.
It's safe?
Yes. During payment, a one-time code is created, and the data of the card itself is not used. Even if someone intercepts this information, it will give nothing to the attacker, useless data.
Opinion
I could not add a Sberbank Master Card, but everything was fine with VISA Alfa-Bank and Tinkoff.
I have been using Apple Pay for a long time, sometimes I also paid through the Tinkoff app on Android phones. Turning your smartphone into a payment system is a great idea, especially when you use it in conjunction with a watch. I attached and went further, for shopping in stores, I couldn’t think of a means for easier parting with finances. The main thing is that the terminals work and everything is set up, otherwise problems arise from time to time, and some establishments in Moscow still work only on a cash basis. It is impossible to completely say goodbye to paper money, but life is becoming more convenient, this is a fact.
For stores, tech-savvy people are a godsend. Shoppers are more likely to shop simply because they like a new way to spend money. This time. The second point is that people go through the checkouts faster, less hassle, more sales. The third point is reliability, simplicity and mobility.
