How to evenly fill the foundation under the fence. How to choose a foundation for a fence - types and criteria
So, the decision was made to put up a fence. The foundation of this structure will be the foundation, and the quality of the entire structure will depend on its strength.
The base is necessary so that the fence does not deform on the ground.
If you have the necessary skills, you can make a foundation for a fence with your own hands.
A solid foundation is necessary so that the fence does not undergo soil deformation
Types of fences
Before proceeding with the foundation, you need to decide on type of fence:
- easy;
- middle;
- heavy.
After determining the type of foundation, you can begin to start work.
For light type fences
For a light type of fencing - corrugated board, picket fence, mesh "netting" - on solid ground, a less costly method of post pouring is quite suitable.
Around the perimeter of the future fence, holes are dug with a depth of 80 to 120 cm at a distance of 1 to 5 meters, pillars are installed in them, burst with stones and filled with concrete. When using corrugated board the distance between the posts is recommended no more than 2 meters, taking into account the windage of the material under wind loads.
This video shows how to build a foundation for a fence:
If the soil is loose, sandy or silty, a tape-and-pillar type of foundation is suitable for a do-it-yourself fence. This type of base is best suited for DIY construction.
Order of pouring
We will divide all work into five stages in order to do without mistakes foundation for the fence:
- It is necessary to make markings around the perimeter of the foundation: for this, pegs are driven in and the rope is pulled, be sure to fix it at the corners. At the turning points, it is necessary to hammer in a peg, also mark the place for the gate and wicket.
- They dig a trench 35-40 cm wide and up to 50 cm deep, in places where the pillars will be installed, recesses up to 90 cm are made. The recommended distance between the pillars is 2 meters, and the height of the pillar, taking into account the underground part, is at least 2.5 meters. We install the pillars, fix them strictly vertically with stones, broken bricks and gravel, check with the level - this is important. Fill the bottom of the trench with a 5 cm gravel pillow.
Observe the rules for pouring the foundation under the fence, in order to end up with a solid structure
- They begin to install a reinforcing belt made of corrugated reinforcement 10-15 mm, it is not recommended to use welding at the joints, it is better to use wire, the longitudinal reinforcement should be corrugated, with a diameter of at least 12 mm, and the transverse and vertical ones can be smooth and of a smaller diameter. The reinforcing belt is first made and then lowered into the trench, it is imperative to tie the pillars - this will strengthen the structure.
- They put the formwork. For its assembly, you can use the materials at hand - old boards, plywood, slate, and so on. This will make it possible to reduce the cost of the structure, the main task of the formwork is to provide the foundation with a flat surface. Expose and wedge the formwork 25-30 cm above the surface, check the possibility of leakage of the filling mixture. Carry out a thorough check of the formwork before starting concrete work. The formwork is a temporary element and should be easily disassembled at the end of the work.
- Concrete is poured. Concrete in stages with horizontal layers and different types solution. Coarser gravel or crushed stone is poured into the ground, and soft sand and cement are poured above the ground. When pouring in stages, it will be possible to avoid voids in the concrete. Remove the formwork after 5 days. In dry weather, the foundation must be watered to avoid cracks. Subsequent work can be started after complete drying, when the base has gained strength.
Foundation for medium type
The middle type of fencing implies a mixed structure: strong posts made of brick, cinder block, stone or bentonite and between them lightweight material such as a wooden picket fence, corrugated board or a lattice made of reinforcement.
Such a fence requires a more reliable base.... For these types of fences, as well as for light ones, a strip foundation for the fence is suitable.
A feature of medium structures is the device of additional supports in the places where the posts are installed.
To do this, where the pillars will be, they dig holes, given that the depth of the foundation for the fence should be greater than the freezing layer, and 50 × 50 cm wide, we knit a frame made of reinforcement, insert it into the hole and concrete it.
For heavy structures
Heavy fences are structures of brick, stone or concrete and have a large mass, therefore, often with an incorrect foundation, they are subject to deformation; for these fences, a more powerful monolithic strip base is required.
When installing this foundation, it is necessary to dig the entire trench 30-40 cm deep more than the freezing depth, to achieve maximum reliability, it is necessary to make a more powerful reinforced belt of reinforcement of at least 12 mm, thanks to the reinforcement, the load will be distributed evenly throughout the structure.
It must be remembered that the fill width must be greater than that of the structure wall, by 15-20 cm. Thus, a monolithic strip foundation of special strength will be obtained.
Pouring concrete is an important step, so before proceeding to this process, you should make sure everything is ready and check that you have the necessary tools. The foundation is poured with ordinary concrete. For the manufacture of mortar independently, the necessary proportions are 2: 2: 1 (crushed stone: sand: cement).
Such a concrete base for the fence will serve for many years without defects and damage.
If you want to protect your site from neighbors, passers-by and to ensure the safety of private property, fences are used. But in order for the fence to be reliable and durable, a solid foundation must be created. This raises the question - how to fill the foundation under the fence and what are the basic rules for performing this operation. The requirements for the base of the fence are the same as for living quarters, resistance to destruction and the ability to withstand the weight of the structure.
Types of foundation for fences
The most reliable fences are made of bricks, iron rods or concrete slabs, because of which the weight becomes quite large. This does not allow the use of shallow or shallow foundations, due to the insecurity of the possibility of collapse.
When choosing the type of foundation, it is worth considering the bearing capacity of the soil and the level of occurrence of groundwater. It is important which buildings or roads are located nearby. Without high-quality geological exploration, calculation and drawing up of a construction plan, a heavy fence is dangerous not only for the owners, but also for passers-by.
There are 4 types of fence foundations:
- tape;
- stone;
- columnar;
- columnar-tape (mixed).
The belt evenly distributes the load from the fence to the soil and is used for heavy fences. With a foundation height of 50 cm or more, the ground part is only 10 cm, and the rest is placed in the ground. To create a strip foundation, bricks, monolithic blocks or concrete pouring are used.
The stone foundation uses large stones of various sizes and cement. This is a fairly durable way to fence. It is less susceptible to destruction, does not require special care.
Column foundation is used for light fences due to the fact that the load on the soil is transmitted pointwise. It is built from stones, bricks, piles or poured with concrete, easy to prepare and erect.
Columnar-tape. With this type of foundation, the main load goes to the pillars, and thanks to the strip base poured from above, it is evenly distributed. In this foundation, the strip base is deepened by a maximum of 20 cm. It is erected from reinforced concrete or metal piles, which are reinforced with cement mortar from above.
Strengthening the foundation
Any foundations, except for the pile type, can be strengthened by digging special supports into the ground. Such supports can be made of special wood, pipes and other materials that add rigidity to the base. This method is very popular for creating strip base... After special processing, the supports are buried up to 2 m into the ground, with a step of 2–3 m.
If the fence is planned from corrugated board, then strengthening the foundation is required. The pipes will not only hold the foundation together, but also hold the fence sheets on them.
Before applying anti-corrosion compound to metal reinforcements, it is necessary to clean them of rust or any other contamination. If metal pipes are used, then they should be not only covered with moisture-resistant compounds on the outside, but also inside. Another option for protecting against moisture contained in binder solutions is to install plugs at the ends of the pipes.
Preparatory work
To fill the foundation for the fence, you need to purchase materials and tools, as well as prepare the territory, depending on the chosen foundation. The main thing is to have a construction plan with accurate calculations, which will facilitate construction work, and save money on buying and redoing mistakes.
Tools and materials:
- bulgarian;
- cement M400;
- reinforcement with a diameter of 0.8 mm;
- welding machine or knitting wire for fittings;
- metal pillars, with a diameter of 5 cm, to strengthen the pillars;
- profiled pipes for a fence made of profiled sheet;
- boards or other materials for formwork;
- roulette;
- pegs for marking the territory;
- rope, creates boundaries earthworks, the ends are tied around the pegs;
- level, to check horizontal;
- a concrete mixer, or a construction mixer with a container for creating a solution;
- shovels if the trench or pit will be created manually.
Foundation construction begins with marking. For this purpose, pegs are installed along the perimeter of the future foundation, four on each wall, and a rope is pulled between them. You should get a rectangle made of rope. In order to prevent the rope from sagging, additional pegs are installed. For a columnar foundation, mark the position of the pillars, placing stakes at their corners, and fastening the rope across the previous one, so that a square is the size of the future pillar.
For a strip foundation, an indent is made on each side of the border by 30 cm for mounting the formwork. If the foundation is of a mixed type, then a trench between the pits for future pillars is 30-40 cm deep.
If a brick foundation is used, then at least 2 m of free space must be provided. This is also necessary for a brick pillar foundation.
If the fence is built on a slope, then it must be borne in mind that the bottom of the trench should be stepped, and the base will consist of several sections. The bottom of each fragment should be absolutely flat, and to prevent slipping, the edges of adjacent sections are connected with pillars.
Create a strip-type foundation
At the bottom of the trench, crushed stone from 10 cm is laid, after which it must be leveled. 5 cm of sand is poured on top of the crushed stone, and compacted. After that, you can proceed with the installation of the formwork. The best way for concreting under a fence, this is a removable formwork from boards. They are strong and cheap enough for private construction. First, you need to mount the boards in the shields, which will be the walls of the formwork, then lower them into the trench and install the lintels so that the foundation is of the same width. Creation of stops in the walls of the trench along the entire length of the formwork.
Before pouring concrete, you need to create a reinforcement. The reinforcement can be welded or tied with wire, this does not particularly affect the result. The finished reinforcement should contain 4 horizontal rods, 2 at the bottom and at the top, as well as vertical rods, with a step of 20 cm.The reinforcement should be 1.5-2 cm less than the future foundation so that the concrete completely covers it to prevent contact with moisture ... In place of the future gates or wickets, a grillage is welded on top of the reinforcement to enhance the bearing capacity.
How to properly fill the strip foundation under the fence, you can watch the video
To prevent the seepage of "concrete milk" into the ground, a dense film or waterproofing is laid on the bottom of the formwork, depending on the funds allocated for construction. If this is not done, the substrate can be brittle and prone to cracking. With a small budget and the inability to use insulation, the trench is moistened with water so that the earth does not pull it out of the foundation. However, due to the drying time of the concrete mixture, this method is still less reliable.
Pouring the foundation
The mixture for the foundation is created in proportions of 4: 2: 1, sand, gravel and cement, respectively. For a homogeneous consistency, it is necessary to start mixing with cement and water, after obtaining a homogeneous composition, sand is gradually added, and then crushed stone. If the foundation is not sectional, then it is advisable to pour the mixture within 1 day. The concrete is poured into the formwork by 5–10 cm, after which the reinforcement is installed and the pouring is continued. It is better to fix the reinforcement at the top until the concrete mixture reaches its top, this will prevent possible distortions that can occur due to the heterogeneity of the concrete during pouring.
With a stepped foundation, the same is done only in sections, and the reinforcement at the edge of the bottom protrudes so as to be a continuation of the upper reinforcement. After the lower reinforcement hardens, the formwork of the upper section and the connecting post is mounted and the casting is repeated. Thanks to this design, the uniformity of the foundation is achieved, which prevents possible landslides of the fence.
Before continuing with the construction of the fence, as in the foundation of the house, insulating material must be laid. The most affordable is roofing material.
The difference between pouring a columnar base from a strip one, only in the final result. In a mixed basis, a grillage is welded onto the reinforcement of the posts, and then the strip part of the base is poured.
When filling the base, one must remember that it must perform its functions for at least 10 years. A properly erected base will not require repair for a long time, it will allow you to install a heavy fence and gates that protect privacy from prying eyes.
Any personal plot sooner or later requires fencing. Therefore, this problem is relevant for their owners. In order for the installed fence to serve as a solid structure and stand for a long time, it is required to lay out the foundation.
Features and functions of the foundation
The main bearing part of the fence is called the foundation. The service life of the entire fence will depend on the variety and quality of its implementation. With a weak foundation arrangement, or its absence, the fence may lop. Also, the swelling of the earth can lead to such a problem, which will entail the destruction of the enclosing structure.
The foundation for the fence performs the main functions:
- affects the stability of the fence;
- makes it possible to equally share the load on the entire structure;
- provides soil retention at the summer cottage during heavy rains and during the period of snow melting.
Base types
The most famous option is considered to be a strip foundation for a fence. It is a necessary element when making a stone fence. The base in this case makes it possible to make a uniform load. Strip foundation we can use it for making pillars in it.
Initially, you need to dig a trench according to the calculated data. Crushed stone with sand is poured on its bottom. Above the pit, a formwork is built, having a height of up to 30 cm, and support posts and metal fittings are laid inside. At the end, the foundation is to be filled.
A cheaper option for building foundations - columnar foundation... This type is often used for sandy or clayey soils.
Poles made of asbestos or metal serve as reliable protection. Support can be brickwork, made on the basis of concrete. The gap between the two supports is approximately 1.5-2 m.
From what kind of soil and weather conditions, a trench is dug under the supports to a depth of 1-1.5 m. A sand-crushed stone pillow is poured at the very bottom of the pit, after which it is compacted. Then the pillars are placed in an upright position, and the trench is poured with concrete.
Often people use a combined foundation that combines the above two types of concrete. Its use is carried out in the construction of concrete-slab fences, structures made of profiled sheet.
The price of a foundation for a fence with brick pillars is made up of the prices of the used stocks. Based on whose production it is, the cost of one bag will come out. On average, it varies from 200 to 250 rubles.
Manufacturing
It is quite simple to prepare the foundation for the fence yourself. You just need to first calculate everything and adhere to all points of the instructions when taking action.
To determine the depth of laying the foundation, it is necessary to take into account the main points:
- design characteristics;
- the depth to which the soil freezes;
- terrain slope;
- the quality of the land layer and the height of the sandy waters.
For the correctness of all calculations, you need to calculate the base area from the foundation. For example, if the length of the supporting structure is 50 m and the width is 30 cm, then it is not difficult to calculate the area (15 m2). Subsequently, this parameter is useful for calculating the depth at which the foundation is laid.
At the same time, it is necessary to identify what is its reliable area. We divide the pressure indicator of the aboveground part by the value of the bearing base, corrected by the reliability indicator, by the soil resistance and the coefficient of working conditions.
The final result needs to be compared with the expected area. The final one must be higher than the calculated one, otherwise it must be adjusted.
Fill
How to fill the foundation under the fence correctly? A heaping soil layer requires the pouring of a combined foundation. Before starting work, you need to dig a trench, the size of which must correspond to the calculated depth and width. In the place where the support pillars will be installed, holes must be drilled.
Then a timber formwork is made around the prepared base. On the bottom of each dug hole under the post, you need to lay roofing material, laid in half. After that, the installation of supports and the reinforcement of the foundation is done using a reinforcing mesh.
Further, the foundation pouring under the fence begins in the horizontal direction. When pouring concrete, it must not be allowed that the formwork is hidden from one edge to the very top, and from the other it is completely absent. Drying time for concrete takes about 3 days.
In hot weather, the foundation should be wetted with water. The formwork is removed from the tape after 2 weeks.
Pouring a strip shallow foundation is easier. It is laid above a layer of frozen soil. For this reason, the correct foundation for the fence is resistant to off-season ground movements.
The foundation is carried out as follows:
- Make a trench to a depth of 0.5 m.
- Fill the lower part of the trench with sand (0.15 m) and press it down.
- Sprinkle the top with rubble (0.15 m).
- Drill holes for digging in the posts, pour sand on the bottom, insert the supports and level them.
- Connect the pillars to each other with reinforcement using a welding tool.
Install the formwork and pour the concrete mixture. At the end of the pouring work, you need to make sure that the pillars are installed evenly.
For other types of fences
It will be necessary to pour a columnar foundation under a corrugated board fence when the height of the fence is up to 1.2 m.
Since the columnar type of material has a high windage, it is subject to increased stress during a hurricane. As a result, the destruction of the support and everything else can occur.
To make a fence holding onto brick pillars, you will need to build a sufficiently strong base for it. Such fences are susceptible to damage if uneven shrinkage occurs. A mortgage device is recommended for the posts. It is tied to the cross-pieces of the entire fence for a firm hold.
Photo of the foundation for the fence
Building a foundation under a heavy fence seems to be a fairly easy job only at first glance. But the durability of the fence itself depends on the correct installation in compliance with all conditions. The requirements that exist regarding the installation of the foundation for the fence being erected are no different from the requirements for residential and outbuildings. Otherwise, such a fence, like any other structure, will not perform its direct functions.
That is why pillars, monolithic structures and a strip foundation are required to create a solid foundation for a structure. After all, a good solid fence is inherently a wall consisting of bricks or iron rods, that is, quite heavy building materials... But for privacy, in order to hide from prying eyes, private developers most often use brick to build a capital fence, which is also much cheaper than iron rods.
The value of the supporting structure
A fence made of brick is considered a heavy structure, which means that in order to withstand such a strong wall, you need a solid foundation.
An integral part of a cottage, country house or suburban area is a reliable fence. It protects private property from unauthorized access by unauthorized persons, and also prevents the entry of neighboring animals into the territory. When planning to build a high-quality and original fencing, it is necessary not only to purchase necessary materials... You should also think about how to build a foundation for the fence. A solid foundation affects the lifespan of the fence and stability. Consider the features of various base options.
Choosing the foundation for the fence - important points
When planning to fill the foundation under the fence with your own hands, it is important to choose the best base design option.
It must meet the following criteria:
- ensure the stability of a massive fence;
- evenly distribute the weight of the fence on the ground;
- keep the enclosing structure from deformations and distortions;
- prevent collapse under the influence of wind or ground movements.
The strength characteristics of the base are directly proportional to the weight of the enclosing structure.
The service life of the fence and its main characteristics largely depend on the quality of the foundation.
Thinking about how to make a foundation for a fence, you should choose the best base design option by analyzing the following factors:
- the type and main characteristics of the soil located at the site of the future fencing;
- the possible value of soil subsidence with seasonal fluctuations in humidity and temperature;
- the possibility of washing the base with groundwater, as well as atmospheric precipitation;
- the mass of the future fence, which can cause subsidence of the base;
- area and material of the fence, which can deform under the influence of wind load;
- the total amount of upcoming costs, which is advisable to calculate before starting construction works;
- features of the terrain that affect the design features of the foundation being built;
- the need for building materials that will need to be purchased on time and delivered to the place of work.
When carrying out the analysis, you should also pay attention to the proximity to the fence of busy highways and railways. The structure must painlessly absorb vibration loads that are created when vehicles are moving.
For the construction of fences, various types of bases are used:
- tape and columnar. It is made in the form of a concrete tape, which has thickenings at the locations of the columns. Reinforcement rods are laid along the length of the tape, increasing its strength. The tape-and-columnar structure has positively proved itself in cold climatic conditions with freezing soils. The base of the combined type is used for wooden and metal fences with brick or block posts;
- columnar. This is an inexpensive base option. Filling the foundation under the fence with your own hands is quite simple. It provides for concreting of supports in pits prepared in the soil. After pouring the concrete mix must be rammed. The columnar version of the base is used for wooden fences, as well as structures made of profiled sheet and netting. With an increase in the weight of the fence, it is necessary to make columns with an increased depth of immersion in the soil;
Currently, several basic types of foundations are successfully used for the installation of fences.
- tape. Due to the increased safety factor, it is able to bear the weight of heavy fences and brick fences. It is carried out by pouring a reinforced concrete tape, deepened into the soil by 60–70 cm. The tape base takes the weight of the fence evenly along its entire length. You can arrange it yourself. To do this, you need to dig a pit, fill it with gravel, lay reinforcement cage, collect panel formwork and make concreting;
- gravel. A gravel bed is a variety strip designs... It is used for the installation of massive fences with an increased height of the enclosing part. The algorithm for the formation of a gravel base provides for the implementation of work on the preparation of a trench, and then the creation of a crushed stone-sand cushion. Further, the massif is compacted, layer-by-layer pouring with concrete solution and installation of support pillars in liquid concrete;
- stone. This type of foundation has a centuries-old history, because the stone has traditionally been used for the construction of foundations. The construction work algorithm is similar to the construction of a strip base. The difference is that instead of pouring concrete, stones are laid on the crushed stone base. In this case, the reinforcement is not installed, and the stones are combined into a single mass with solidified cement mortar.
Depending on the design features of the fences, they are used various types foundation foundations. One of the most common options is tape and columnar. Thanks to design features, it is able to withstand significant loads that are created by most of the erected fences. Let's dwell on the features and technology for the construction of each type of foundation.
The most optimal design option for self-erection is the strip-column base
Tape and columnar foundation of the fence
Key Features:
- combined structure, made in the form of a concrete tape, reinforced in the places where supports are installed;
- increased safety margin due to steel reinforcement along the entire length of the concrete tape;
- even distribution of the load from the fence along the entire length of the supporting structure;
- the possibility of independent construction due to the simplicity of the foundation.
The shortened construction cycle should be noted, with a total duration of no more than ten days. At the preparatory stage of work, it is important to perform the following work:
- assess the condition of the soil, the movement of which can reduce the strength of the base;
- calculate the dimensions of the concrete base corresponding to the weight of the fence;
- determine the dimensions of the reinforcement cage to prevent cracking;
- purchase materials necessary for construction work;
- prepare working tools and equipment.
The foundation for the fence is poured according to the following algorithm:
- Mark the outline of the future base using pegs and a cord stretched between them.
- Prepare a pit 60–70 cm deep and a width corresponding to the dimensions of the future concrete base.
To achieve maximum reliability and the required stability of the structure, the tape and columnar supports are reinforced without fail
- Make local recesses in the pit at the locations of the support columns, deepening 20 cm below the bottom of the trench.
- Carefully level the bottom of the trench with a shovel, remove large irregularities on the side walls.
- Pour a mixture of sand and gravel into the trench and compact it to a cushion thickness of 15 cm.
- Install a formwork along the contour of the base, which will prevent the soil from collapsing.
- Cover the wooden surface inside the formwork with waterproofing to retain moisture in the concrete.
- Drive in the metal pipe support poles so that they are upright.
- Lay the elements of the reinforcement cage inside the panel structure, connect them with a knitting wire.
- Prepare the concrete mix and pour it evenly over the entire length of the formwork.
- Compact the poured concrete to release air inclusions using steel bars or a vibrator.
- Level the top plane of the poured concrete block using a trowel or rule.
- Maintain the moisture concentration needed to hydrate the cement by periodically hardening the surface.
- Lay sheets of roofing material or polyethylene on the concrete tape to maintain constant moisture.
- Do not subject the cured concrete mass to loads until the operational strength is reached.
- Disassemble the wooden formwork after three weeks, remove its component parts from the pit.
The tape-and-columnar base will be operated for a long time, maintaining its integrity under the influence of significant loads.
Fence with a columnar foundation
This design has its own characteristics:
- does not require special training;
- can settle on their own;
- will save financial resources.
For the construction, it is necessary to prepare the required number of pits, install vertically columnar supports in them and then pour the concrete mixture. Wooden planks can then be nailed to the posts, wire mesh or corrugated board can be fixed.
Let's consider in detail the construction mechanism:
- Prepare the pits with a garden drill.
- Fill them with a pillow of a mixture of sand and rubble.
- Tamp down bedding thoroughly.
- Lower the posts into the pits at the general level.
- Fill in the space between the supports and the ground concrete mix.
When performing work, pay attention to the following points:
- the interval between the supports, which should correspond to 2–2.5 m;
- the depth of the holes, which should be 1–1.2 m;
- the diameter of the depressions exceeding the size of the pillars by 15–20 cm;
- the thickness of the bedding, which should not exceed 10-15 cm.
When performing work, you should focus on the mass of the future fence and soil features.
Unground reinforced concrete foundation
Tape pouring the foundation for the fence
Feature of strip base:
- increased strength;
- resistance to ground movements;
- even distribution of loads.
The following materials are used for manufacturing:
- concrete M200 and above, intended for pouring;
- reinforcement with a section of 0.8–10 mm, used for the manufacture of the frame;
- wooden boards, moisture-resistant plywood or boards for formwork assembly.
The construction process is similar to the arrangement of a tape-and-columnar base. Procedure:
- Dig a pit 70–80 cm deep.
- Pour a layer of crushed stone-sand mixture on the bottom.
- Tamp it down to 15 cm thick.
- Install the panel formwork, secure it.
- Assemble the reinforcement grid and lay it in the formwork.
- Pour concrete mortar into the trench.
A month after concreting, the cement hydration process will be completed and further work can be performed.

- Work to the required height of the stone base.
For normal aesthetic perception, you can stop laying when the foundation rises above the zero mark by 50 cm.
Summing up
For the construction of a fence, various types of foundations can be used. The choice of the best option is made individually, depending on the characteristics of the soil, the results of calculations and personal preferences. When performing work, one should be guided by the requirements of technology and use high-quality materials. In the absence of skills in performing construction work, it is worth contacting professional builders. They will make the necessary calculations and quickly build a solid foundation for the future fence.
